Hey guys,

Had my engine put in together with a known working deep cycle battery.

I'm trying to start up the car first time, its not cranking and just a small click sound when the key is turned.

I have attached a vid... Could it be the starter?

Hey mate,

I have an issue with my ignition switch where I have to rapidly turn the key to get it to start, that would be my best bet or the starter/solenoid.

Ckeck you leads that they're tide fit on battery terminals. If that doesn't help check your starter motor, give it a bit of tap to see if it will turn over.
Also, if you have multimeter, check the battery voltage while cranking, you never know, maybe after all it is not as good as you thought.

As above.
Try jump starting with another battery.
Try putting jumper lead from block to battery neg.
Try shorting the big terminals on back of starter.
Check the starter leads are on good.

Where is the click? Underdash or at starter?

Could be the battery, could be the leads, could be the starter, but assuming they're all ok another possibility is that the ignition switch is not getting enough juice to the starter solenoid (too much voltage drop through the aged wiring etc). Over the years I have had a number of older cars that had this problem and usually the quick and dirty fix has been to put a relay between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid so that you get the max possible voltage at the solenoid. Worked a treat on the old TP magna, the Lancia Beta HPE (RIP) ad my mother's '97 mazda 626.

It may not be very likely in your case because this problem usually manifests itself as a click or two and then it starts, and I get the impression that yours is not starting at all. Worth keeping in the back of ones mind though...

Probably a dumb question but can deep cycle batteries give you enough CCA ? I thought they were better at prolonged discharge at lower amps (as opposed to really high amps for a few seconds).

I just got back hooking up the optima batt to the rvr for a second attempt, now I cant even see the immobiliser led light up. Basically no power thru out the car.

Ive checked the 30A ignition & 80A alternator fuses, both are ok. Umm whats happening?

That's what I epistle be checking. A bit of rust or oxidisation between rather bolt and chassis and you're gone. Easy test, make a second earth cable with a good connection. If it goes, then you know, simple. Bit of dicking around, but it eliminates a possible at worst.
Best of luck.

I suppose that's why they're called smart phones  :P  My auto correct does that too. Yesterday I typed in "on my way home hun" but it auto corrected to "You stupid wench, you ruined my life"  Smart phone indeed

Mine did exactly the same thing today. i haven't had it running for a while.
I was turning the key from outside the car and when I eventually looked at the dash there were no lights on at all.
Momentary confusion and wondering what had I done wrong.

Doh!

Forgot to press the button on the button on the immobilizer.

Ah well it has been a long day.

Have you just done a engine change  ?

if so check your cables Chassis to Engine :) major problems if grounds are not good...

Understeer is when you hit the wall with the front of the car and oversteer is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car. Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you.
