Found an old quote of mine from a couple of years back as I remember there was something about the thin top layer that was very important.

I know George has a stroker with balance shafts deleted. What sort of crank pulley/dampener were you using mostly before the bearing damage? (resonance issue)

I know what, its those bloody 7-bolt EVO engines!!! They're always stuffing up! lol

The aluminium Aluglide bearings have been used for donkeys years in many turbo cars and you will have no problem running with them in a daily driver. The new Aluglide technology would be fine IMO and even better than what they were before.
The tri-metal Race version bearings probably should be used where you have had your bottom end machined and balanced and crank journals line honed.
If you havent had your bottom end precision machined, its probably not a good idea to use the ACL Race style bearings. why? Because according to the tests, the top overlay layer is very soft and thin (a poofteenth of a bees doodle) and any distortion in rotating assemblies or crap in the oil can wear it out quickly. Imagine a special ceramic coated piston - the lubrication and heat reduction properties is great provided the coating does not wear or flake off the piston. However, if the coating does wear off the piston its OK because the piston is still the forged alloy & silica piston composition underneath. But with the tri metal Race bearings, when the top layer wears the 2nd layer of copper/tin doesnt have as good lubrication properties.
FYI, Im running ACL Duraglides in because at the time the Race series wasnt invented yet lol

I run a stock balancer, but if it was related to machining or vibration you would think it would effect all bearings, not just one.....

And if it was a bearing fault, wouldn't the same wear be seen on all the bearings, not just #2?

There had to be another cause to do that kind of damage to #2.

I wouldn't think they would necessarily all have the same fault. I have had 3 different engine builders check it and they all feel it was a faulty bearing, im just happy it didn't hurt the crank

Yeah that's the thing, unless your pulling down the engine regularly for maintenance for competition you just don't know how they are fairing.

There could be plenty of other people with similar problems using them, but as its a more lengthily interval between rebuilds it's hard to know.

Unless it goes bang!

You are running tight clearances too George? Maybe too tight on that one? After seeing these stories, I'm shitting my pants about what I'm going to find. I'm running ACL race.

I was running 0.0019"-0.0021" on my big ends. which are the bearings that played up. This is fine for clearance. But that is in a full competition engine.

I run fairly loose in comparison to George, and about the same as SKM. With the 2.3L they should be well hammered to death by now.

yes tight, but the same all across, no signs of heat on the crank, rod or bearing either so I doubt it was too tight

Its a damn shame another Australian owned manufacturing company has gone the shitter.

It's not just the government who is to blame. A lot of the work practices etc are 1950's based! AUS manufacturing need a lesson from Europe/Japan, because these countries still manufacture AND are competitive with Asian countries despite their labour $ being much higher.
