DD - daily driver for all of you oldies getting your perve on.
Well now that you're here, you might as well help with my little dilemma.

 

What would be a better daily out of these two - RVR or HH Galant VR4?

I have both and each of them need a bit of attention but both should come up alright.

I just don't have the space to keep both and I'm having some trouble deciding which one I should keep.

 

RVR is an auto HSG 

VR4 is a manual A-spec

 

I've had a manual SSG RVR and it was awesome. I had always hated RVR's due to their appearance and size but the thing was EXTREMELY smooth and comfortable to drive. Heaps of room for comfort but not much useful space. The manual I had wasn't great on fuel and I'd imagine the autos would probably be worse. - Idk if all auto RVR's are like this but mine is very laggy when it comes to throttle response. When you put the foot down, a lot of the power is consumed by the tranny and takes a while to get moving. Makes for a smooth ride but I'm almost certain it's gonna have horrible fuel economy numbers due to this.

 

So, upsides: VERY comfy and auto makes for lazy driving.

Downsides: bad fuel economy and atrocious aesthetics. 

 

I've also had a few VR4's in the past. Mine were never great on fuel but I think with some tuning that could be improved. I believe this one has 8.5:1 pistons which should help. They're still quite a comfy sedan on the inside, you can't be as wreckless with regards to ground clearance and the suspension is a bit firmer.

 

Upsides: Looks much better, better fuel economy and more fun to drive if you're feeling like a spirited drive.

Downsides: sacrifices ride quality and cabin space (although the boot is bigger than an RVR go figure).

Does it have to be 4wd ? Had both & have had both running in lsd fwd. Big difference in responce at

light throttle & wot redlines a lot quicker. Both use less fuel when driven in fwd mild. I prefer the RVR.

Good point Aldo. I guess it doesn't need to be but I'd probably get bored of fwd. My current daily is an Excel. Runs off of an oily rag lol

They are also eligible for immediate import under the SEVS Register! There's a few on Carsales going for over $15k plus on roads. Import yourself and you'd save shitloads- I still can't understand why importers and brokers are charging $3000 for compliance alone! I can't imagine they'd need anything significant for Compliance as they share pretty much everything with the ADM Outlander, bar the running gear!

They're pretty pricey for a 2002 model car at $15,000.

The 2003 Outlander can be bought for $5000-$6000 these days.

IMO if a daily driver is what you want, then don't screw around with turbo cars and go for a no frills 2003+ Outlander instead to save a lot of $$.

We had the option to get her brothers outlander but she says it feels too sluggish

 

She wants to buy a 2005 WRX, but I don't wanna spend 15k on a Subaru lol

My brother used to import cars. It is a pain in the ass. The amount of effort you have to go to, to store them, to wait around for shit to happen and be inspected to make sure it isnt modded like a japanese car. God forgib Australia lets a Japanese style car into this country.

My brother used to import cars. It is a pain in the ass. The amount of effort you have to go to, to store them, to wait around for shit to happen and be inspected to make sure it isnt modded like a japanese car. God forgib Australia lets a Japanese style car into this country.

 

 

I have gone through the import process but via America- I agree it's a painful exercise but if you add up the amount of hours you have to work to pay for someone else to import the car for you vs. amount of time/cost it takes you to do it yourself, then you are still saving thousands that i'd rather spend on mods

 

I hit up an importer on their Facebook page to give me a break down on the $3000 compliance costs that they charge on an Airtrek. They refused. It's a croc of shit IMO and just another way they make a buck whilst still making their $1000+ 'Broker Fee' seem reasonable. Import approval is a walk in the park. Get a reliable Freight Forwarder/Customs Agent on board and you're set!

Assuming you know what you are doing. While I work with logistics, stuffed if I know what is needed to move a car here. Specially into ... victoria..... (waits for gasps).  Sometimes just getting an imported car is all a person is willing to do.

 

Also, seriously daily drivers, 1988-1991 nissan. Take your pick. Solved.
