hsg-r 3rd gear crunching help

my 97 hsg-r is crunching 3rd and some time 5th

 

iv put sae 90 gear oil in would this be the problim or is it the syncros

 

dont have mush exprerance with gearboxs how do i go about changing the syncos

You will need a press, gear puller and the manual. You need to be pretty competent/confident in your abilities to have a go at your gearbox

If you can pull out the gearbox. You can probably pull the gear clusters and post some pics for the gurus to comment on. But you may as well reseal and put in input and inter shaft bearings while box is apart.

thanks man, ive been doing same googling and they can do this for years so mite just live with it.

 

do you think changing the oil to 75w-90 will make a difference??

You either have to shift slower at lower rpm to reduce the occurrence and severity of it crunching, or you're going to have to bite the bullet and get new synchros. Its not just the synchros that get damaged when you crunch gears anyway so you might have the keys, hub and slider that may need changing too. You have to destroy a bearing to get to 3rd/4th cluster anyway so that's one bearing that needs replacement whilst you're at it.

Think of a gearbox like an engine, except it has more moving parts in it. Would you go through the hassle of opening it up just to change the rings?

+1 to EVO oox mate. I know its a pain in the arse, god knows I know. But you really have to pull the bastard out and have a look. I have tried different types of oil and additives but if it really is bad you know you need to put up a call for help with a rebuild or similar. These boxes will not simply respond to a different fluid, been there and done that. Sorry dude.....

Double clutch the upchange to third. Get rid of the quickshifter
