I have had a bit of a search on here, but can't find any info regarding the stock oil cooler on the HSG.

 

A few years ago, the stock oil cooler (i.e. the sandwich-plate style one) failed internally and allowed oil into the cooling system.  I was unable to remove it as the thickness of the cooler meant I couldn't put anything else in its place at the time.  It was resolved by capping off the coolant feeds, and then simply attaching a short piece of hose from the coolant inlet to the outlet of the cooler.

 

I have had no issue with the cooler being out of commission, and even after a 20-min track session, the temperature didn't go over 135C and 30 secs into the cool down lap, the temp was down to 110C.

 

I am revisiting its complete deletion, and now wonder if it's possible to use a centre-post from an Evo 1-3, or probably many other '90s Mitsubishis.

 

Has anybody had any experience of this?

Yes, this a very popular mod in US (I have it on my Summit) Usually people go with "forward facing" oil filter housing from one of the non-turbo Mitsubishi's. It simplifies things and gives you more room to work on exhaust.

I forget what was the application, but search for that description and you should find it. Just make sure to get one that matches your engine (6 bolt or 7 bolt).

I'm not sure which mitsos in Australia have the forward facing housing, I have an N/A one with no oil cooler on it and it's a bit different to the 7 bolt one, there's a couple of places to tap into for senders.

I think it was mathias that has a 3g one on his car.

I have eventually ordered my front facing oil filter mount kit...  just see if it then takes me another 18 months to fit it lol

yeah man, I use them too, the '3g' as it must be known is the winner, only found out by accident as the engine I bought had a cracked one and only one I could find was a 64

EVENTUALLY!  The forward-facing filter housing is installed.  Have I mentioned that I am SO SLOOOOOW! :sleep:

 

 

One of the four bolts holding the housing on is located under the lower cambelt cover.  This was easier to resolve than I first realised, as all that was needed was to slacken off the alternator belt, remove the four bolts holding the alternator/aircon belt pulley to the crank and then the cover could be easily removed.

 

Old oil cooler now in the bin. :ph34r2:
