Hey guys,

I have a stock 4g93 that is my daily driver to work. Very reliable so far with minimal boost dialed in via a manual tap in the engine bay. I'm wanting to hear your thoughts on just a few easy and basic upgrades that I could do to get some more power and speed out of her whilst still being relatively economical, as it is primarily my daily driver.

I'm thinking along these lines: Just an upgrade to EVO manifold and turbo (TD05 16g or 20g?) and bigger injectors. I already have a 3" exhaust and aftermarket air intake.

These upgrades have been on my mind for a while and within my grasp on my "could very well do" list. Anyone else's input on this would be cool.

The car looks great, i think it was one i was interested in but it was too far away

I think a lot of guys have upgraded to the 4g63t, but im the same as you, just want to have a little fun without having to buy shares in the fuel company! :P

Anyway i asked a similar question not long ago, this is the reply i received from Dave_GSR1.8

Improving you GSR but staying incognito...

If you are after just a moderate power increase with some handling improvements in your GSR you can do this without drawing attention to yourself, these are the things you can do;

- fit a bigger rear sway bar - whitleine 20mm is one option, dials out understeer

- fit caster correction bushes to the front, these add more caster for increased dynamic camber

- fit camber adjusting bolts to front wheels for more static camber

- fit a bigger turbo back exhaust, just keep it as quiet as possible!!

- fit a bigger AFM (609 or 055), injectors (eg 510cc)

- fit a bigger turbo (16g as you have mentioned above) and set max boost to 15psi

- fit a front mount intercooler behind the standard bar (remember, incognito!!)

- chip the ecu (eg ecm link) or fit an evo ecu, I can't remember the exact details for this second option but plenty of info in the forums

- fit some green stuff brake pads (or do lots of research to see what else is out there)

- replace all suspension bushes not already touched

- fit a short shifter

All this should take you to around 160kw atw (give or take a little, depends on so many things) with improved handling and stopping and... most importantly... your car still looks completely stock!

Wicked! This is exactly what I was after. Any other suggestions would be welcome but this is an awesome start. I didn't wanna go real overboard with mods but did want an increase in power for some fun when needed. And of course I wanted reliable stopping and drivability as it is my daily driver. Thanks for the reply and I look forward to whatever anyone else has to suggest?

I jumped on this car when I saw it for sale. I was after a Holden or Ford Ute for work but for the amount of money I was willing to spend the GSR provided me the most bang for my buck. So I'm back!!! lol To be honest I did have it up for sale sadly a few months ago as I was really hard up for cash, but I was able to weather the storm and keep her 8-)

BTW, any idea where I could get a short shifter from? Has anyone had any luck with chipping their GSR ECU?

evo ecu

510 cc injectors

evo 16g turbo

(keep current manifold) get aftermarket dump and mod exhaust to suit

will keep the same or close to stock fuel economy

the ebove on my coupe equiped with 93t and awd was good for a lazy 13.6 pass

So no upgraded AFM with all of the above mods? You can just use the stock GSR one?

Wouldn't you want to fit at least an Evo 1-3 intercooler if you go for an uprated turbo like the 16G?

I have an evo intercooler with aftermarket air intake so it looks like the next step for me would be the TD05, injectors and ECU upgrades. I'll throw a spanner in the works just for good measure...

I've recently found a crack in my exhaust manifold. I know I should just replace the whole thing, but for the interim, and in the interest of a quick fix for now, could I just get someone to weld it up and have them heat wrapped? Would it be a reliable alternative for now? How long would it give me do you reckon? (in the hopes that it holds out until I can afford a replacement)

Also, I rung a local Jap Import tuner/specialist/mechanic asking if he knew of any places that I could locally get a evo manifold with TD05 and he said that there are, of course, other turbos that would do a better job that I could look at. My thinking is that the TD05 would bolt straight on without too much hassle (which is why most of us turn to the TD05) I mean, of course there are other turbos out there that are more than capable of doing the job but I'm not wanting to do the whole machining this and that to make it fit, etc. Unless I'm mistaken, and someone can suggest an alternative to the TD05 that would possibly bolt straight on or require little fiddling around to make it fit?

The evo manifold won't bolt up to your engine. If your manifold is cracked, to be honest you're probably better off trying to find a stock cast iron one and match port it to run the td05. It will last a lot longer than even a new stainless manifold and should provide more than enough flow for what you're after.

Td05 is a good turbo, everyone will tell you to run a garrett, but like you said, it will bolt up and definitely provide enough power for what you're after.

my bad yes you would need the 609 afm to go with the injectors turbo and ecu never even considered the evo intercooler since i've always had the large front mount on my coupe. but yes you'd want that too

Wowzers! And this is why these forums are so valuable. Everyone else I spoke to outside the forum was like, yeah mate the evo manifold will bolt straight on to your 4g93. Just grab one and bolt it straight on, they said! lol

Ok, Im in search for a new manifold now...

yeah the 4g63 evo manifold has a diferent manifold to head flange to the 4g93. however the flange from manifold to turbo are the same bolt pattern you will however want to bore out the outlet on the 4g93t manifold to match that of the td05 it is quite markedly larger

Its a prick of a job to port it out its almost 2.5cm in difference...you will need a good die grinder and at least half a box of beer to accomplish the job with any remaining sanity.

Now I know what I'm in for. I'm looking at TD05's on both gumtree and ebay and I'm thinking that I could just buy a brand new one on ebay? Anyone here have any success with ebay for buying parts? I'm looking at a new cast iron manifold and TD05 16G on ebay. I managed to find EVO stock ECU's on gumtree and I've got someone who can supply EVO injectors...

If you're looking at buying a new 16g, only buy from Kando dynamic, Kinugawa brand.
