Why do I keep blowing my head gasket

Ive just blow my head gasket again due to over heating.
I obviously want/need to find out why this keeps happening.
What in thinking is that it has somthing to do with the fact that I have not long done injector up grade 510cc and used a different gsr ecu that had previously been socketed and chipped with a evo meek chip. Ive read that in some gsr/evo fans are controlled by ecu and in others it is a thermostat. Is this true? My fans seem to work fine but when i first noticed it getting hot and popped the hood for a look I noticed the fans weren't working. Is there a possibility they are not working properly dew to ecu change? They also dont go once i turn car off and turbo timer is working causing it to get slightly hotter than normal.
Any help or thoughts appreciated. Thanx

Turn the turbo timer off, supply the fans with constant power via a relay activated with ign switched power through a thermoswitch?

Well that's what I'd be doing rather than not being sure and cooking HG's.

Well that's what I'd be doing rather than not being sure and cooking HG's.


I was thinking of maybe going down this line but id like to find out why its happening for sure so i dont wast my time doing this and it doesn't solve the problem. And if it is the ecu can i not just get the right 1(sold mine :/ ) and get it fitted with the chip or is the fan controlled with in the chip ( sorry dont know much bout electrics and the inner workings of ecu ).


Does other peoples fans run while there turbo timers are running the car? Sure this is controlled by the timer it self and not ecu?

On some cars the fan relay is activated directly from the transducers, in others the trigger signal is sourced from the ECU.
In order to troubleshoot, you could just run your fans on constant power and see it that stops your overheating issue. It might be something very simple like a busted thermoswitch or intermittently faulty relay - had a few of these on Mitsi's http://www.dragtimes...1030857056.html

Turbo timer will do nothing special... all it does is keep the ignition circuit active when you take the key out (i.e. car still thinks key is in the ignition).

 

Simple test... Warm the car up (temp guage needle should be sitting at about 1/3) and then have it sitting there idling... after about 5-10 mins or so you should hear the fan kick on (if you are outside the car).

 

Another suggestion would be to fit an oil cooler, as this will help reduce temps of oil and as a flow-on reduce temps of coolant.

While this would be a band-aid effect if fan isn't working, it will help, and will also help once fan is fixed anyway.

Ive been out side most of the day wasting gas listing to my fans cum on and off and watching temp gauge. They seem to work fine. The only time it got a little hot was when i would turn key off and timer would take over. It defiantly doesnt go when timer is on, if i w8 for fans to turn on then turn key off straight away fans go off then turn key bk on fan cums bk on straight away.

Im starting to wonder if it may b a issue with radiator cap holding to much pressure. Could this cause head gasket to go?

How much boost are you running?

What headgasket are you using?

Are they new head studs? and what settings are they torqued too? (might be stretched and allowing head to lift?)

Do you recheck the torque settings after a week or so?

Running 11 psi.
First time it went it only had a shitty fiber head gasket and studs. Unsure of brand and what torque they were done to as I brought motor being told that it had been rebuilt but never run. I replaced it with a steel shim head gasket and used some new tty head bolts. Witch I done up to 74Nm, then completely loosen. Then tighten to 20Nm, then 90 degrees then 90 degrees again. I had the head skimmed, crack tested and hardness tested.

I did not re torque head bolts after week or so as i did not think you could do this with tty bolts and using angles.

Where are you losing the gaskets? I.e. Between cylinders 2 & 3 or water into cylinder 3 etc...

sounds like the turbo timer doesn't allow power to the fan

how long do you cool it down for? is it over heating when you drive or just when you park it?

a high pressure cap will not make the cooling system worse, it will actually raise the boiling point
of the water.

Where are you losing the gaskets? I.e. Between cylinders 2 & 3 or water into cylinder 3 etc...



First time it went was water into number 1. Bubbles in radiator and water out exhaust.
This time unsure as ive not pulled apart yet but same symptoms. Will be interesting to see if it is the same spot.

Yes i straight edged the block and nothing stood out to be warped but I suppose if when i pull head bk off and if its gone in the same spot this would indicate that block could b warped in that spot. I would have thought it would have leaked straight away if so and not a couple of weeks after.

I supose it could of been lecking straigt away but i didnt pick up on it till it lost enough water through exhust then it heating up more than normal due to have just been stoped and having turbo timer on so fans not running.

Fix your cooling issue first, if you have one.

The intermittent fault with the denso relay was hard to pick up in both cases as when I idle tested the cooling fans, they'd work however when driving sometimes they wouldn't.
