Even if the car is really clean slide under the front LHS and check for any oil or fluid around the bottom of the timing cover.
Could indicate shaft seals need doing or water pump leaking
Need new timing belts if it got oil or fluid on it
Also see if coolant (not water) is clean and up to the mark and see if all coolant hoses feel OK especially the smaller ones around the throttle body and to the heater.
(Crunchy hoses is also not good) If the overflow tank is full of gunk it probably will need a flush.
While looking under the lid also check the tops of the front struts for cracks in the rubber of the joint.
None of these jobs are impossible as DIY but some care is needed and a lot of reading to find stuff.
If you do get one I recommend the Mitsubishi ASA to download from the forums here for part numbers and drawings (I can't quite remember where it is )
Still love the RVR but am paranoid about little noises

Thanks for all the tips!
So as it happened my regular car (the EP91 Starlet) decided to have clutch problems.
And so then as it happened I didn't really want to invest in a new clutch for a car I didn't enjoy in the first place.
Whilst I would have replaced this with an RVR, it isn't really a car I can afford to run, in terms of fuel consumption - having had experience with an RVR before, I know this to be true.
So I went out and purchased a Toyota Caldina. :-D (1998 1.8E) Which cost less still than any RVR I could be looking at, and is better equipped and fits my needs better. So I just wanted something reliable, wagon shaped.
I'm sorry to disappoint! Maybe when I graduate from university and in theory have lots of cash, this will happen.
