Are any of these e85 compatible?
Hi evo-gsr and thanks for your inquiry.
Generally speaking, any oil can be used when running E85, ethanol or even alcohol. However there are 2 major impacts ethanol and alcohol have on oils. 1 is dilution and the second is acidity.
Without getting too technical, the basic rule is:
- If you have a stock standard vehicle with ethanol compatibility from factory, then an oil with the correct viscosity AND an API standard of SN will be suitable. Eg: Commodore with eFlex requires H-Tech 100+ 5W30 as it is API SN and 5W30 in viscosity.
- If you have a tuned vehicle with fuel flex tune or dedicated ethanol fuel, the choice is subject to the amount of dilution you encounter. Heavy dilution required thicker oil to counteract. It is recommended that the oil change interval for tuned cars on E85 be 3000kms or less depending on dilution. With that in mind, the API standard is not so critical.
Oils with API SN have additional acidity inhibitors to permit change intervals up to 15,000kms. Oils with API SM do not have this additive and shouldn’t be used when trying to achieve 15,000kms change intervals on E85.
So the short answer is that all of Motul’s oils can be used when running E85. Unfortunately there is no blanket recommendation due to the wide and varied tuning standards of E85 in the tuner market. Fuel quality plays an important role too but we’ll leave that for a tech article in the near future.
Hope this helps.
