Close ratio gearbox options

Help Support 4GTuner:

I also tried contacting NRG Racing Parts last year about "KAAZ Close Ratio gears" after stumbling on this webpage and seeing what looks like an EVO custom gearset: http://energiejapanparts.com/en/product_line/kaaz/ . But they got back to me saying that they aren't EVO gears and Kaaz don't make these anyway lol . So why put a Kaaz logo on the fkn pic? :thumbsdown:

They put me onto a company called MFactory at this link: http://www.teammfactory.com/ and I clicked on BROWSE OUR CATALOG.
But I couldn't see any gearsets for the EVO's? Mainly HONDA - Honda Civic/Integra Type R FWD dog gear sets are much more available worldwide.
Imagine if you could bolt up a FWD Honda box to the Mitsu! You would have lots of ratios to choose from too.
Maybe they can custom make ones? Worth asking, but they say they don't make custom one-offs as described at the bottom of this post.

OK, found a place in the UK called HHMS (Harry Hockley Motorsports) who makes dog boxes to suit FWD Proton Satria/M21 coupe (same as CC Lancer and will bolt onto 4G93 and 4G63 blocks obviously)

You know how you said you are planning on rebuilding a new block later? Can I suggest doing it with a newer evo 4G63 block from an EVO4+ lol .
At least those gearbox internals are stronger OEM to start with, are cheaper dog gear sets and easier to get a hold of. Then lock the bitch into 2WD.
Actually, because you have your engine behind you now, is your current shifter setup modified to change gears properly or do you have to shift the gears backwards in a mirror image?

post-573-0-07813700-1416098569.jpg

It all shifts like normal, I have modified the shifter to work like normal. Thanks heaps for the info, I am seriously considering biting the bullet and
buying a fwd sequential gearbox but its a lot of money.

They always are a lot of $$ as you know mate. It costs the same to rebuild engine internals as what it does to get a strong gearbox.
You could go back to your old PPG AWD dogbox again with a spool. Do you know who has it now? Go knocking lol

Below is just the info Ive put on the evocoupe website for oem FWD transmissions. None of them really have close ratios except for the Mirage Cyborg MIVEC CJ4A. The others have a bigger gap between 1st and 2nd gear.
An option could be to send oem bits to Matthias in Germany to make some dog gears. But who knows about the strength of the input shaft. Would just be a waste of $$.
You could stuff around with oem stuff but I think you would just break them every outing. There's no fun in wasted $$ and time changing trannies :thumbsdown:

3.083; 1.947 (2nd); 1.285 (3rd); 0.939 (4th); 0.777 (5th) - Code F5M222VRXE
Mitsu CC Lancer 1500cc Carburettor: 3.363 (1st); 1.947 (2nd); 1.285 (3rd); 0.939 (4th); 0.777 (5th); 4.021 (Final); 3.083 (Reverse)

Cyborg MIVEC CA4A/ CJ4A:
3.083; 1.947 (2nd); 1.285 (3rd); 0.939 (4th); 0.756 (5th); 4.592 (final)
At 100kmh revs should be about 3100rpm. The difference could be tyre size.
Cyborg MIVEC CJ4A:
3.071(1st); 1.947 (2nd); 1.379 (3rd); 1.030 (4th); 0.767 (5th); 4.625(final); 3.363 (Reverse)
At 100kmh your revs should be about 3160rpm (slightly higher due to higher final drive ratio) - This gearbox has different ratios throughout compared to others (except all 2nd gears are the same) - This one is made for pure acceleration provided you can get power to the ground.
A CYBORG RS CJ4A with an ATS Final Drive Ratio of 5.000 will rev at 3416rpm at 100kmh. This gives quicker acceleration but lower top speed.
The top speed for a CJ4A is theoretically 237.32kmh.
With the ATS 5.00 ratio theoretical top speed is 215.86kmh.

Im hearing you. Im going to keep it aspirated so it wont make any where near the
torque a turbo set up will make.

OK, I didn't know a great deal about the Cyborg gearboxes until what I've learned over the last few hours.

You/ve got a CC Lancer engine block mounted in the back of a CE Mirage and set it up for RWD.
The way that it has been done requires you to actually fit a CC Lancer type gearbox.

Here are ratios and gearbox codes for the 92-96 Mirage Cyborg:

CA4A Mirage Cyborg MIVEC FWD (CC/Proton Satria shape)

They are a W5M31 AWD gearbox but you can lock them to 2WD.
They can also take the normal EVO I-III front LSD in them. e.g. your W5M33 EVO LSD will fit into the gearbox)

OR

As Brian has mentioned Speedgear also sell an option for GSR/EVO/VR4 gearboxes: http://www.speedgearracing.com/2013/08/mitsubishi-gear-ratio-lancer-evo-1.html
- Racing gear ratio fit for:
* Mitsubishi 4G63 Lancer Evo1/2/3
* 4G93T GSR Turbo CD5A
* VR4 Turbo
* Talon four wheel
* Eclipse four wheel

- Use for gearbox Standard,Semi LSD and Full lock LSD
- Heavy duty strong material.
- Special Design for road,street race and drag use.
- Awesome response.

Racing Gear Ratio Spec:
1ST = 2.400
2ND = 1.476

So that will give you different 1st and 2nd gear only for a normal EVO AWD gearbox that you can lock to 2WD.

OR

Just get a EVO I-III dogbox and lock it to 2WD.
You have a choice of different EVO gears from PPG/PAR.

eg. PPG Box
3.125 / 2.031 / 1.47 / 1.080 / (not taking final drive ratio into account).
The ratios after the final drive reduction for PPG are 1st - 2.75; 2nd - 1.684; 3rd - 1.16; 4th - 0.862; 5th - 0.617

If you fitted a newer EVO engine block from an EVO 4+, then you can use a gearbox from a 1995/6 - 2001 CJ4A

You are a legend. Thanks heaps for the info.
currently im running a locked GSR box, at the track im shifting at 9800 and crossing the line in 3rd gear @118mph with a 24.5 slick.
The revs drop 1st to 2nd 5400, 2nd to 3rd 6100.
So in a nutshell I need a 6 speed box so the revs dont drop below 7000 on each gear change lol.

Then swap out the gsr 58 tooth crownwheel for a evo 1 or 2 64 tooth crown and use a smaller wheel diameter like trippy said. That'll get you over in 4th.
9800 rpm? Horry sheeet!
I couldnt get my large single plate clutched GSR gearbox shifting without crunching at anything over 6500rpm at the track lol. I had to wait for the revs to drop because the gsr box only has a single synchro 3rd and 4th gear.
Are you contemplating putting a FWD box in?
