Hi Guys heres a question that i would like an opinion...

is a COP worth it in your opinion? or is a stock setup good enough for say 450-550hp?

and are they worth the coin? ($350 plug and play - $1500 with a CDI)

Stick with OEM twin coils until you get to the point when its blowing spark, then get something else like a COP setup or individual coils.

At that sort of horsepower at the wheels I assume you will be in mid 20 psi boost area where the OEM coil packs start to become an issue.

If you are running an aftermarket ECU, a cheaper alternative would be to use 4 x individual LS1 Bosche coils with built in ignitors like what Haltech use.

I have a set of the individual coils in mine mounted o na bracket on the firewall and they seem to be doing quite well. You still need spark plug leads obviously but the Haltech ECU can control them no problem as either a wasgted spark or a sequential system. I tried installing COPS on my coupe, but with a 4G63 the coupe bonnet hit the top of a couple of them. So I had no choice but to use the separately mounted 4 x coil packs. You can see pics in my rides thread. Oh and Im not using a CDI system. Im getting plenty of spark at 30psi without any issues yet.

How do you know when you're blowing a spark?

It misfires under high boost.

Your tuner will tell you immediately especially after he's adjusted the spark plug gap and still cant get good spark.

Interesting Rob, I have stock ignition and coils and have zero issues at 35psi.

I have since added a cdi setup (still with stock coils) but that is only really for the launch control and selective timing retard.

Personally I don't see any reason to change from stock unless you are looking to changed to sequential ignition instead of wasted spark.

How much time do you spend in a parking lot with your performance car? If you do a lot of parking lot driving, and hang out in parking lots, chances are you are a ricer, go home and read import tuner. If you’re complaining about noise you should not be modifying your car. You should also consider no longer being a man, please hand in your genitals at the door.

Thanks for that.. truth is the car has a cop (jhh built from toyota coils) and missfires like a mofo. It could be a power issue maybe... its running motec M400 and my hi boost is 20psi.. i am about to change to a gtx turbo external gate etc and sick of battling the ignition issues.. and from research its 50/50 on cop or factory coils.. so was looking at putting factory back on and run a dyantec arc 2 unit..

I've just upgraded from LS2 coils with inbuilt ignitors to an Autronic CDI unit using M&W COPs.  I was having spark blow out under boost (26psi) and had closed the plug gaps almost completely.

I think it comes down the individual setup in the car and the tune it has - there's no real "one solution fixes all applications" answer.

its more to do with cylinder pressure than outright boost.

I could run 32psi fine on my old turbo, went to a 35 size turbo and it was misfiring at 30psi.

for me it was actually a peak torque number that it hit when the spark went out, not outright power

i am now thinking i will put it on a dyno at a mates shop and see if i can get some understanding of why... i was also told that some wave or frequency at revs can interfere... but in all honesty it runs fine and hard on a tuesday, wednesday and some saturdays.. every other day it coughs and farts... so annoying
