Whilst removing my exhaust manifold today (due to a massive crack on the underside about 5cm above the turbo flange) I quickly found out that the centrehole stud was basically freespinning inside the head. I removed the stud, and of course the thread inside the head was cactus. I am lead to believe that this centrehole is direct access to the oil gallery. Wtf Mitsubishi?!?!

So, besides having to take the manifold to be reweld/repaired, I have a few questions on the replacement of the centrehole stud.

Firstly, are there any precautionary measures i must now take because of the possible metal shavings contamination in the oil? With the extraction of the stripped stud, is there any chance that some of stripped metal from the head threads has actually 'fallen' into the oil gallery? Or am i being paranoid?

Now, the stud issue... What are my options here?

Do I re-tap the head to accomodate a M10x1.25 stud?

OR

Do I re-tap the head to use a heli coil & existing M8x1.25 stud? (what size & thickness heli coil as I haven't used a heli coil before)

Now for the oil gallery issue.. How can i safely catch the metal shavings without them falling into the oil gallery? I've been told to dip my tap into grease to 'help' grab some of the metal but i'm still not confident that, that alone will save me.

What procedure is recommended and why? I'm completely stumped as to how i should approach this, from here on in.

Cheers

Yeah that stud goes into an oil drain back from the head to the sump, not a pressurised oil feed gallery. So worst case you'd have a litttle bit of rubbish in the sump, but I'd say it's mostly on the stud by the look of it. You can pop the rocker cover off and block off the rear of the hole through the gallery before cleaning it out/redriling/inserting a helicoil. I've got a helicoil kit (they have their own particular drill sizes and taps) so I'm happy to bring it over and do that for you too. Could probably grind out the mani crack and reweld that for you too actually.... send me a pm if you like, I'm southside of brissy

didn't have time do do it right but found the time to do it twice....

Or u can use a barrel stud. They are larger stud that is machined down. So like an m10 down to m8 thread. Volkswagen used to have em off the shelf or find someone friendly with a lathe. I have one if u get stuck, I can machine one up and sent it ur way

Need to make a bracket off the block to support the turbo. It cant hang, as it will crack the manifold.

eJack, Would welding a bracket from manifold flange to the turbo flange eliminate this again do you think? How would i make it go from the block to where on the manifold? Do you have a pic?

i know on 93's theres actually threaded holes on the block for exactly the purpose of bracing the manifold/turbo

I think the 63s do also. There would be a exhaust hanger on the block.
i built off those mounts and up to the turbo. Im not sure if just holding up the exhaust as it curves under the sump (like oem) is enough, its better than nothing for sure.

I've seen plenty of aftermarket dumps with a brace to the block for that reason

A must for aftermarket stuff. The std intake manifold has a big arse support on it.......and it's only aluminium!  I could only imagine the forces on the ex mani unsupported and with some treatment from our Australian roads lol

Hopefully these gussets will be sufficient support for it until i can afford a decent manifold. 11651124_1612260899061432_1726131230_n_z

Could have extended them to the flange, but then you would need a crane to install it...

On the dump pipe before the cat converter, make sure you put another bracket down there somewhere to hold the weight of the zorst.
