I've had issues with RVR and Evo GSR/EVOs in the past. Everything appeared ok ... but no joy in connection. So I wired in directly to the ECU the OBD port and the reflash wire. Bingo hooked up straight away. I reckon you would have to strip the loom apart to see what the issue is !!

I think that will be my next job, just to eliminate the wiring from the equation if nothing else, plus I'll get to put it in a location that's more convenient.

That is the answer. I have been told on the ECMlink forum that the evo 3 ecu (although working in an RVR) has to run OBD1 to work. I'm trying to decide if I should socket on of my HSG ECUs so I can run OBD2 or just hard wire the entire OBD1 cable that came with the whole set up (I have both cables)

Should have just gone the e6 ecu straight away! Unbeleivable how easy the swap is to do,
I agree 100% on that.

I decided to socket the HSG ECU myself because it would be easier than faffing around with wiring.

It connected straight away, so look forward to a build thread...............well, another build thread 'cos the other was like watching paint dry.
I've already started swapping parts over so welding and wiring will start this week...........Mwahahahaha!
Note to all, evo 3 ecus have a different com port setup to an rvr even thought an evo 3 ecu can run in an rvr.

Cheers Jack I was thinking off going for a ZIF socket, but didn't see the point considering I an running link. I also did the J1 to J2 jump.
I used a solder sucker to pull most of the solder and some Goot wicking tape to clean up the residual. I took the protective coating off with some thinners, I'll put a coat on once I finish socketing the rest of the ECUs.

ZIF sockets were the thing to have back in the day!
I installed a ribbon cable in my old S13 so I could switch EPROM tunes easily during 'chip tuning'.
The ribbon cable went from the ECU to the glovebox and into a vero board with a ZIF socket on it for the IC.
