I have a few EPROM ECUs I have been socketing and have noticed some differences between them.
Connection differences: None of these are visible, but when using and E3 ECU in an RVR it will not connect through an OBD2 port. The ECU will work perfectly fine in an RVR, but it uses an
OBD1 connection which means it can't be tuned via ECMlink while in an RVR chassis. OBD1 and OBD2 ports have different shapes and totally different communication interfaces. OBD1 won't really be seen in any car from around 1994 on, however there may be a few exceptions I'm unaware of.
↑↑ Evo 3 vs SSG. You can see that these two are nearly identical except for the capacitors (circled). They may have used the old style E3 board on the SSG but replaced the capacitors with more reliable ones for the SSG as the units in the E3 were prone to exploding/popping/leaking.
↑↑ Evo 3 vs HSG. The differences are really apparent between these two, different heat sinks and capacitors as well as changes in the PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and black plastic used for the harness socket instead of white.
All loom connections are identical between all of the ECUs with only communications interface differences with the E3 and different tune in an un-socketed SSG ECU
