It's actually a very big deal - the two are very different cars when it comes to the VIN and what the buyer may want to own.
Whilst it's definitely a "buyer beware" situation, at the same time the seller needs to be as upfront and transparent as they can be about the item.

and you might not be aware of how often it happens so no one was passing judgement on you, but to get an idea (a drastic comparison) its like a skyline gts-4 to a gtr, ya wouldnt wanna pay for a gtr to own a gts-4

The way i see it, if you buy a non-genuine and didn't do the homework, it's your own fault. Probably best referring to it as a "Mitsubishi Evo III / GSR" seeing as it's closer to an Evo III than it is a GSR.
