Guys, check out this thread on DSM tuners, it sheds some light on this very confusing issue:

http://www.dsmtuners...-numbers.114903

Last 4 Letters on the transmission code:

1st letter Final Drive Ratio

N = 3.545 ratio
W = 3.909 ratio

2nd letter gear ratios

O = dunno ratio?
P = dunno ratio?
Q = close ratio?
R = wide ratio?

3rd Letter Front Differential

B = open front diff
F = ?
G = ?
W = viscous front LSD
X = ?
Y = open
Z = ?

4th Letter Type of car it was used on. (Mounting locations?)
D = CB Lancer
E = CC Lancer
K = HH/HJ Galant
M = Galant
S = 89-90 Eclipse AWD 5spd
T = DSM G2
V = 91-94 Eclipse AWD 5spd mfg 6/90-2/94

Edit: Looks like "L" is one of our wagons, because both of my Summit transmissions had it.

Get the rear diff ratio while you're poking around, it should be on the back of it, so you just need to poke your head under and take a look.

OK, so that settles it then. If you get a box that is not ssg specific then it would be wise to swap over the parts that I stated earlier.
All good Edy.

I checked out the code on the box in the HSG-R and it ends with WXNL. I have a metal backed barcoded sticker where the code is normally stamped, and there's no stamping underneath the sticker................... :blink:

Edy, what is the ratio of your rear diff?

Benzo can you please double check. I've never come across a gearbox code with "X" as the 2nd letter before, only the 3rd letter.

I'm asking because I've personally been maintaining a gearbox code study for many years and have about 95% of it completed.

Some cars I have issues with are the ones that came out in the U.S and FWD models, but it's almost there.

I haven't broadcast it in its entirety yet because people copy and paste into forums around the world and if something is wrong, there goes a centre diff, rear diff, VCU or transfer case breakage.

See how EDYMAN has a 3.545 rear diff in his SSG RVR.... I've got it down as using a 57 tooth front diff crownwheel and 15 tooth output pinion. This means his transfer case is 1.074 ratio and rear diff is 3.545. This is the same as late  2G DSM's 1997-1999.

If Ben is referring to his spare manual box, it was out of a N/A hsgr....
His daily hsgr is a bit weird, as far as I am concerned, as when we had the motor out there was an absence of stamping. In the stampings places was bar codes, I should have took some pics at the time....

Sorry man, I mixed up the letters, it should have been WNXL. I'm taking Endone for back pain so I'm going to blame that for the error   :P

So I'm getting the box rebuilt by Newcastle Gearbox and Diff, I've had nothing but good experiences with them plus they've done over a dozen rvrs so they know what they're doing.

So I'm getting the box rebuilt by Newcastle Gearbox and Diff, I've had nothing but good experiences with them plus they've done over a dozen rvrs so they know what they're doing.

Really? They have the worst reputation in town from many people and workshops who have engaged their services.

I took my first gearbox there a few years back. The guys charged me $77 just to remove 1 bearing from a shaft. $77!!!

Then the guy at the counter slammed the input shaft onto the stainless steel benchtop when I went to pick it up and he chipped a couple of teeth off it and fucked it up. I didn't notice til I got it home and saw it.

Those arseholes are the reason why I decided to rebuild gearboxes myself. Actually, I went out straight after that, bought my own press, bearing pullers and splitters and everything else I needed to rebuild gearboxes.

Armed with the workshop manual and buying several gearboxes at the time, I learned how to DIY and got some extra help from pros in NZ and the US who helped me out with some questions.

GSR and EVO owners in town know that if you want a GSR, RVR or EVO gearbox rebuilt by a workshop in Newcastle, take it to DenStoj Auto Centre in Carrington. He's done lots of them  http://denstoj.com.au/.

I haven't had anything but plessent experiences with them. And they've beaten a lot of people on price. So until something bad happens in happy to keep using their services.

Personally, I'd take Robs advice, He's the resident 4g guru with the manual gearboxes, and they're not something ya wanna roll the dice with,
I'll end up spending 3-$400+ in freight alone just getting my auto to who I want to build it! but when its done, I know it'll be right... and be effin awesome too, lol

Well my cars already there now. I'll see how I go if I have any dramas with them I'll make sure everyone knows. But like I said so far they've been good so I'll give them a chance.

I have to apologise for my response earlier as I would hate to see someone spend big money at a 'reputable place' and get shafted [ha, a pun! :w00t: ].

I was only thinking about you and hoping for the best possible outcome for you with an experienced W5M33 AWD gearbox specialist - one that would probably be kinder to your gearbox and your wallet than the other mob.

If you run into any issues with them not being able to get their hands on any RVR transmission parts etc, give me a PM. :thumbsup:

Nah all good man. I value everyone's opinion especially those more experienced than myself and have dealt with them in the past and had bad experiences. I'm kicking myself for not getting feedback about where I was taking it earlier. I would've gone to denstoj if I had of known they were the place to go. But like I said it's happened now and I won't go back again.
