Came back to my car tonight to find someone tried to steal it. Managed to clear the snapped scissors in the ignition but the inside was so munted I couldnt get my key in there to start the car.

Any of you guys have any experience with changing ignition barrel? If I can do it myself I will...

Daim sucks to hear that. Ignition barrel is pretty simple to change, but remember that once you change it you will need to change the door locks too. If you find a donor car get all the locks and keys (inc boot and fuel cap if you have one)

If you cant get keys a good locksmith can sort it out..but changing the barrel is easy as Stan says.

Just had a look at a couple youtube videos about replacing the ignition cylinder and looks pretty straight forward. Looks like I'll be heading to the wreckers tomorrow...that is, if the car is still in the carpark when I go back tomorrow.

Changing the ignition barrel is easy but it requires that you fit the original key into it so if the barrel is damaged this might not be so simple

Fuck that, I would of hammered a screwdriver in there and forced the barrel to turn an start, no way would I be that keen...

Yeah I thought that might be the case. I seen one clip where he had to drill it out and then use the screwdriver to twist it.

I couldn't sleep so Im here in the carpark in the wifeys car with blankey and pillow...and crow bar just in case lol

There's a bunch of pricks breaking into cars at work and trying to steal them without success - leaving a trail of broken glass and ruined ignition barrels.

Would be a good time to look into hidden kill switches and a cheap GPS tracker.

I had someone do the same thing to my 1. Unfortunately modern cars have advanced ant-theft measures so that means that older performance cars like ours become bigger targets.

I had a locksmith change over the internals after I found another barrell at a local wrecker. That was easier than trying to change all the door locks etc.

If getting the barrel out is an issue you could change the entire steering column (from the donor car).

^ spark plug leads would be an easy one too if you didn't have a removable ECU. Not many thieves would have a spare set handy.

Or get an auto sparky to put in a simple kill switch to the fuel pump?

Problem is if the deterrent is hidden then you'll still experience damage to the vehicle. Make it obvious.
