Hey guys I need to change the heater core on my evo, I am wondering if there is a nice write up on how to do this somewhere.I have spent hours looking on Google and trough a few different forums so if there is a write up that would be great .also I can't seem to get the plastic trim that holds my stock gauges and vents off. I have all the clips in done but the top right seems to be held up by something and I don't want to break it.any thoughts ?

You need to pop the side vents out that are at the base of the A-pillars - use a pair of needle nose pliers with a bit of cloth and just give them a gentle 'yank'.  They'll come out easy enough.  That'll expose 2x bolts you'll need a 10mm or 12mm socket on a long extension to undo.

 

Pull the steering wheel, indicator stalks and column covers off too, it'll make the job much easier and reduce the chance of damage.

 

The rest is pretty straightforward - just take it slowly and walk it through in your mind before you put the tools on it.

thanks man I did as you said for the top vents and I dont think I would have found those guys! great tip, do you have any suggestions for the trim around the stereo and as to why it wont come free? as far as I can tell all the clips are free even the top right hand side clip which is where It feels like its stuck.

You have the screws for the stereo trim out as well as the clips? It should just pop out.

There are 2 phillips head screws pointing upwards that hold the stereo surround in. Once these are out you use a small flatblade to prise one edge up and as above it just pulls free. However there is also a clip with a cable attached that needs to removed also.

The key is to do things gently at first so you can feel out where it's catching before trying to just rip the trim off (and break something!)

 

Remove the centre console and gear shifter too - it'll help when you need to roll the dash rearward towards you and reduce the risk of damage.  You need to remove the centre console trim anyway to get access to the bolts holding the dash centre support rods to the tunnel.  To get that centre console trim off, you need to take the gearknob off the shifter, which goes back to my earlier comment about removing the shifter.  The last thing you want is the thread on the top of the shifter gouging the top of your dash.

 

You'll also need to take the lower speaker covers off on either side of the dash so expose the 2x bolts holding the lower part of the dash assembly to the sheet-metal.

 

When you get the cluster out, you'll see the white mechanical speedo drive end clipped into the dash, with 2x big male electrical connectors.  Disengage these from the dash plastic, otherwise you'll run the risk of damaging your wire harness when you try and wrestle the dash away.  It'll also help getting them off when the dash is still in position, rather than trying to manage when it's half in/half out where it should be sitting.  The mechanical speedo clip is a little tricky to get off, but just be patient and carefully work your way around it.

hey guys thanks for all the comments you guys rock! I figured some pictures may help show you what I am struggling with right now.

 

Here you can see that I have already removed the center shifter console, it doesn't show that I have also already removed to instrument cluster. I am now trying to remove the plastic radio trim. All the clips are free so in my mind it should come off now, but the top right hand side seems to be still held on some how. I do not want to start yanking cause I know I will break something and this car is super rare here so parts are hard to find. 

 

In this picture you can see that every where around the piece is free except that top right side ( but the clip is free ) . You can also barely see a light grey clip that is connected to a cable ( although you cant see the cable ) . I did have the clip off and disconnected but that still did not free the piece at all, so now I am at a loss. the dash feels like it is nearly free but I know there are some bolts hiding behind the this keeping it down.

 

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

That is the cable I was referring to earlier in my post above.
If you move the little slider that is attached to that round grey ring it will allow a little bit more slack..just back from that is a rectangular shaped clip which holds that cable into the surround. That needs to be pressed down to let it slide out of its housing and then the whole lot will come out...its tricky but that is 100% what is holding it in there.

You might even find it easier to follow that cable down to the footwell area...seeing as you already have all that part removed....and disconnect it from that end?

thanks I will have to try that tomorrow after work, and the dash is coming out for a few reasons. The stupid heater core plastic pipe broke when trying to remove the heater hose in the engine bay so I need to replace either the entire heater core or see if I can track down some new plastic  or preferably metal tubes to bolt onto the core. The other reason is I am ripping out all the interior and giving it a stern cleaning cause there is some sort of funny odor in the car and I cant get it to go away haha. Also need to track down some interior door panels, and new seats all around ( stock ) as these stockers are all torn up. May see about having them re upholstered.

Just want to say thanks to everybody to has replied to this thread, You guys rock! Also would like to thank evo-gsr for this small tidbit of info. This is exactly what was holding the dash up and as soon as I released it from the bottom the dash fell right off.

Whilst you have the dash out, it might be worth checking your firewall where the clutch pedal bolts up.  The firewalls are prone to cracking in this area due to a poor pedal box design/setup from factory.  Do a search on this forum that runs through the problem and the fix.  It'll be much easier to address if you have clear access to the area.

FYI - that centre console thingy is still available from Mitsubishi. I broke my aircon vent controller on the top left and had to order a new one. It was ~A$150.

 

Every one at the wrecker was busted, so it must be common!

well I definitely may be looking for a new one I do plan to restore this car, only thing id like to do is put some normal bolt on stuff and change the color to dandelion Yellow   . 

 

as soon as I can be I will start looking for interior parts, everything from mint carpet to seats if my local upholstery places wont do it.

Noooo! Don't change the colour! The blue is a pretty rare option IIRC.  Besides - Yellow is an EVO3 colour and you have an EVO2.

 

 

 

But anyway - it's your car - do what you like with it....

the car is actually black and is an Evo 1, and while its true that the Yellow is a evo 3 color I just dont find the colors for the evo one all that interesting from the onesI have seen. They are all either black, silver or white lol and this is how I would love my car to turn out looking like but the spoiler painted yellow instead of black. If it was blue I would probably keep it that way haha.
