On the weekend my beloved Evo1 was entered into and they tried to take it. Nothing valuable in the car, and nothing taken except the ignition barrel. Luckily not the car either.

I always lock the car, but it doesn't look like they forced entry?

 

It's not ideal, and it could have been worse (trashed and smashed)

My question is, why would they take the ignition barrel? 

 

They've snapped it off the column so how much can I expect it cost to try and get my car started again?

 

Additionally, can anyone recommend any type of alarm or immobiliser as a deterrent?  I might use a steering lock for the while.

Unfortunately  have no choice but to park on the street.

 

It's sad, but the guys at Techsport have a lot of recovered Evo's of all ages - different ones each time I'm there. Pretty sad in my opinion.

Try a club lock in future. I always do this. Makes it hard for them to drive. Even if they cut it, it buys time.

That's shit. They are easy to open with packing tape because the lock button is on top of the door card. You could take them out and they won't be able to do it again that way haha

If you want a new steering lock/ ignition just go to the wrecker, should be the same as any cc lancer. Have a locksmith code it to your key and refit to the car.

Although it might pay to get the whole set of locks from the wreckers so then you have different keys and swap them all just incase the fuckers try get a key cut from the ignition and come back.

Same thing happened to me a few years back. A club lock won't do much other than take more time to remove (a good thing though). An alarm does nothing either.

 

Your best bet is to have a good immobiliser and a back up kill switch. 

 

Rumour has it that you can remove the main fuse from the engine bay and this will work!

Unfortunately they are very easy to get into, A simple cable tie and your in, in less than 10 seconds. I'd go a hidden kill switch, a fuel, ignition cut or both, a momentary switch and a relay setup with retaining contacts, that way the car would start unless that button is pushed every time.

Ignition barrel on the evo is slightly different in that it has the illuminating ring. Other than that it is a direct replacement.

Sorry to hear Bjorn.

 

First and foremost make sure your insurance policy is up to date!!!

 

Then I'd look at a decent alarm with a 3-point immobiliser setup and a loud-ass siren.  You could look at a cable lock which hold your bonnet down so they can't pop it open and disconnect the siren.  You could make a steel tether with a padlock so that you can only lift the bonnet enough to get the key into the padlock for the times you do need to access the engine bay.

 

Look at an independent fuel cut switch so that if they DO get past the immobiliser the pump still won't start.  It might be a pain for everyday use but a wheel clamp would also add another level of visual deterrent.

 

You want to do everything you can to dissuade the everyday joyrider who takes what they see as an easy opportunity.

 

However if they're professionals and they really want it, they'll just drag it up on a flat-bed or go full Apex style and bust into your home to steal the keys.

As mentioned above, get yourself a whole new lock set from pick yourself type wreckers (some wreckers you have to ask for the key for the car as they hold them in the office).
 

it looks like they've got stock at the one in Dandy:
- Ign Lock with key $39
- Door lock barrel -$8ea
- Boot lock - $9

 

Which area did they try to pinch the car from?

The guy i bought my evo from said his got broken into 3 times so whatever the immobiliser is it must have worked i guess.

 

His 2 bits of advice to me was 1. don't wrap it around a tree and 2. watch where you park it.

 

I reckon WRX drivers must have it worse though, apparently a safety mechanism where if you jump on the roof the doors unlock

i'd somewhat beleive it if the car has auto locking door from factory it stands to reason there would be a mechanism to override this in the case of a rollover.

Most cars now have a requirement where in the event of an accident the doors must still be able to be opened so that occupants can be reached/get out.

 

I don't think they put auto locks etc, the body is designed so that as much of the impact loads are diverted away from the door opening as possible, resulting in minimum deformation to still allow the door to open.

Back on track: what's the latest on your evo? Have you taken any additional steps to protect it since the attempted theft?

I did take some extra precautions this time. One of them being a club lock.  These work well.  I know now because night before last, someone tried again.

 

Couldn't get past the club lock and tried "cutting" through my non original, but real momo steering wheel.  Lucky it was alright quality because they seemingly cut through all the leather to the steal!  door handle lock barrell broken as well.

 

I have some limited cctv footage which is clear enough to see that it's a light coloured wagon with roof bars (something like a 2010 Mazda 6 perhaps) 

They came about 2 am and spent a good 10 minutes.  It was clearly targeted, because they drive right up to it, cut their lights before they pull up as well.

its not like they are a group of kids walking up the street trying their luck.  

 

Wouldn't surprise me if its someone who knows these cars and might want some parts.
