Don't you hate it when about 100km after an oil change the filter spontaneously ejects near a major intersection, and then you pump the contents of your sump all over the road. On the upside this resulted in an instant oil pressure light I managed to spot in about 100m.

The fireies came out and sawdusted the road for me. There were a few close calls before they turned up. But fortunately no fender benders. There were lots of people though, who thought the best way to deal with a loss of traction while accelerating was more throttle.

No idea where the filter went? Had a unsuccessful look for it. I could see it was instant big leak by the oil on the road. No oil, lots of oil. I'm assuming the thread failed because there are small remnants of it on the filter mount.

I had the issue with Ryco filters. There was a batch of them that had different heights on the top plates for some reason, this meant there was less thread for the filter to grab onto. Lukcily mine did the same thing but in my garage and I was able to shut it off before I caused any issues.

I'd write in to them and make a formal complaint, it helps if you have photos and the filter in question obviously. All I got was 4 x new filters from them (the correct ones). Not sure if they have since fixed the issue as I always check them before buying them now and haven't come across the ones with the problem.

Here's the thread I posted...

No sensor - just my eyes and my paranoia when I started the car after the service. I always walk around the car, look under it for strange noises, leaks and smells.

I had a similar problem to this on a coffee and laps at Queensland Raceway. The filer loosened a tad and blew the Oring out of the groove. Lucky for the light idiot light and guage. It was a k&n filter.

Something interesting I noted on the weekend when I finally got a chance to deal with the Galant, was Ryco have changed the bottom of their filter. At first I thought the thread was deeper in the filter but I measured it and it was the same. I did note however that when I put the verniers in an old filter and then into a new one, what was an interference fit in the old one had a little play in the new one.

On the good news side, I filled the sump (it was empty in 100m) fired her up and everything seems OK. Pressure is right and there are no horrible noises like rod knock etc.

Thank god for that!!! Weird about the interference/play between the old and new though....

You won't believe it but I did an oil change on my car on the weekend and it appears there are still some of these "out of spec" Z411 filters floating around. I had the filter blow off on startup and spew oil all over the garage floor. Luckily I shut the car off straight away so no harm done. I got suspicious as this hasn't happened since the last time I had issues, so I checked some filters I had on the shelf at home and they were the correct versions.

I'm tempted to spend the extra coin and go to a K&N from now on.

Bugger, but at least you were still in the garage. Funny you should mention K&N, because in light of my experience I'm thinking that I'm going to go with them in the future too.
