I was at QR on a mid week sprint and was passing a caged V6 Commodore race car on the main straight when the computer cut the engine due to overboost

Back in the pits I checked the max boost on the recall button on the gauge and it read 25psi .The car is tuned by Rob Chapman for 20 psi.

Drove the rest of the sessions with a sharp eye on the gauge .

I initially thought that heat had cooked the hose to the gate as it had done quite some time ago and after jacking it up that is what I found so replaced the hose with new TS silicone hose and went for a drive still overboosting so replaced the boost T with a connector still overboosting bugger so under the car once more and tested the gate and air out the top port so diaphragm is stuffed,

Had a new part installed but decided to get the place I got it from to test it and was shown a video with the valve working and that it was fine. (I had installed a new gate in the meantime) They suggested that it may be too close to heat so had my engine builder turn up a 90mm long extension to get it even further away and a heat sleeve is now over the new hose to the gate as well.

A couple of weeks later I decided to do my own testing so fired up the compressor and adjusted the regulator to read app 18psi max and used a tyre gauge to connect the bottom port and a length of hose from the top port into a bucket of water and found a mini spa bath in the bucket so off to the same place that had given it a clean bill of health for more testing and they now say ti's faulty despite NEVER BEEN FITTED TO THE CAR. :fuuuuu:

Have sent the gate back to Turbosmart and await their reply.

PS the gate had only been on for less than 3000klm's

NOTE Turbosmart were kind enough to supply the replacement part at no cost despite it being outside the 12 month warranty.

Good job finding the issue. So the diaphragm was not good I'm assuming?

The original  1 was split

With the new diaphragm in to my thinking it can only let air out of the top port when testing off the car  is if the diaphragm is faulty or not sealed to the housing or very unlikely escaping via the 3 small grub screws that hold the valve

.

Air can also leak past the valve stem BUT this would not show up in the way it has been tested by me with a continuous flow of  air exiting the top port..

Unfortunately I was not allowed to see the testing being carried out by the so called  "expert technicians" as I would have been able to demonstrate my way and  that clearly would have shown that something was not quite right.

All I can say about the tech that carried out the initial test and said that it was fine must have a hearing disability like I have .This is why I use the water test method. Ears are RS   BUT I have 20/20 vision

They also said that there was no leaking past the valve stem and that there should have been minor leaking there.

To my mind any air leakage would lead to higher than spring pressure boost levels much like a boost T does.

what kind of boost control are you using?
what pressure spring is in the gate?

14 lb springs and a boost Tee and that has been fine for 20 psi for app 3000klms

PS the boost Tee OR the level it is set at  has absolutely nothing to do with air escaping the top port

The original gate has been returned to TURBOSMART at their request for testing and they have EM'd that it has arrived .

if it only happened at the track after a few laps then it could have overheated and started binding up or damaged the diaphragm. see what turbosmart have to say.

would it do it in every gear?

ps both my teil gates would leak through the grub screws. no big deal
