A little more progress on the weight removal and other things.

There is a bit of gearbox stuff that may be of interest to some of you anyway.

I had the front crownwheel machined down to remove some excess weight, amazingly it made a big difference.
The theory is that the pinion would shit the bed first anyway so it should be fine I think.

if you compare it to the old one you can see how much has been taken off

Posted Image

We also cut open a spare viscous that I had to see if it can be improved at all.
I removed all of the plates and cleaned them up, looks to be in good condition still.
I have some left over dow corning fluid from my old front lsd that I may use in it and do
a back to back with a stock one.

Also did a few small mods on the rear rotors to remove a little weight

no holes on the face so they will be fine, the rears dont do much work at all anyway so they wont get very hot.

That really isnt that many holes. I have seen heaps more on other rotors

Wouldn't a 2 piece rotor be lighter and save drilling holes?

these are the rears, I do have 2 piece ones on the front though.

actually wilwood do do a 2 piece rotor and 4 piston caliper rear kit but it weighed 0.5kgs more than the stock set up
before I smashed the holes in it. (my old boss has them on his)

It was done on a laithe so the spacing is spot on.

A little more progress,

A bit of work on the door hinges, alloy bolts to mount them too.

Posted Image

front LSD has seen some weight reduction also along with some smoothing and polishing

Posted Image

work has also begun on the front end, rails have been pretty much stripped clean ready for the custom rad support and
lower tie bar

Am now subscribed to this thread after reading a bunch of it.

Possibly dumb question so forgive me. I'm assuming every little bit of plastic trim at the front behind the bumper (wheel arch liners etc) are being removed?

yes mate, all of that is long gone, I also now have an RX7 radiator that will sit down lower in the front of the car
on an angle so the air can be ducted out of the bonnet vents which should also draw heat from the exhaust manifold and
turbo out from under the bonnet also

Posted Image

Also work has started on the rear guards, I have gained easily another two inches or more of travel in the rear
so a nice low ride height should be pretty easy.

The fronts will also be flared out by hand.

A few more parts have also arrived but i will update on the weekend

Interesting choice of radiator, and imperssed you've got it to fit. If there's one thing a radiator off a rotary can do though, it's keep things cool!

Great thread BTW. Gives me a lot of inspiration on things I could do to mine to lighten it.

The radiator was chosen purely for the fact it is not as tall as the stock one.

Because the radiator support will be all custom fitting is pretty easy really as it doesnt
need to sit in the stock mounts etc...... A bonus is that the outlets are on the same side and
similar positions to the stock evo ones.
I am still deciding if i will run a fan or not at this stage.

Ahhh... you're talking about an FD. Maybe I'm thinking of the FC radiators as I remember them as being huge things.

If it's track only then you're probably gonna get enough airflow to keep things cool once you're going.

Are you sure you're up for that shayne? you can see the tyre through the fuel filler now lol, I
dont think much has happened this week though which is a shame, calipers have arrived though
and my gearbox internals will be back to me tomorrow or monday which has been holding up the installation
of the engine.

I don't need to go as extreme as you, but some flaring is definitely required!
