What tension should the alternator belt be at? how do i get it to line up straight and if its not done perfectly will it do damadge?

Alternator settings?

.... sounds like you tightened the tensioner without letting off teh locknut. It should go straight on, you tension it until when you push on the belt it has no more than 10-20mm of movement. (in the centre betwen the alt and block)
Loosen the locknut (goes in sideways below the tensioner) then wind the tensioner in/out as required, then tighten the locknut.
