Roof rubber help - update
#1
Posted 17 July 2007 - 11:02 PM
for those who actually have taken them off which would be a few of you,
what's the best way to get the rubber strips on the side of the roof / above the doors , unclipped without damaging the clips on the car , as well as not bending the actual steel enforced roof rubbers and its clips?
just a quick pic because im bad at explaining them:
i remember a friend of mine took off his on his gsr and broke the clips on the car, as well as bending the crap out of steel/rubber strips.
i guess what im asking is besides taking them off slowly etc. is there a special method, like starting from the boot side and lifting upwards slowly ?

i have both of mine, but theyre starting to crack and look s-house
i want to take them off in a way i wont stuff them, and then im gonna paint strip them, primer and spray them... i have nothing to lose, they cant look any worse than they do right now. if it comes out disastrous then ill consider replacing them.
but if im definately gonna stuff them as soon as theyre taken off then i may as well leave them there to rot

ive already looked into it, as i need to buy 2 new roof strips for my car ....
it is almost impossible to remove the strip without damaging some clips, especially around the rear and front windscreen, where there may be sealant from the glass that is also holding the clips in place .....

Careful when removing if you still wish to keep and reuse the strip you are taking off.
Good Luck.

I have started sanding them down, have fun if they arnt all that bad as the rubber when not brittle enough is a lot of work to remove!

i started stripping back my roof rubbers, to find that one of them had a rusted hole through it... probably repairable, but im easy in giving up so i threw them out
decided to ring around
i knew mitsu was a rip off for them, but i rang anyway - liverpool mcgrath spares. the pair totalled $406 !!!! ($203 each side) ba hahhaha.
then I decided to ring Proton spares in campbelltown (NSW). Told them I had a 95 Wira sedan, told them what I needed, and the pair was $171 . Had to pay up front and theyre ordering them in
Those rubber things still arent worth that kind of money, but compared to mitsu spares i thought 'stuff it' and just bought them.
I also asked them for the part numbers so i could post it for any of you guys interested
I forgot which one was left and which one was right, but these are the part numbers anyway (for proton spares of course)

you may find that they are not black, I looked into this option aswell, and the protons ones I could find were a dark grey :?
the cheapest i could find from mitsubishi, was mitsubishi chadstone, at ~ 180 a side ...

so $360 a pair lol... absolute joke ay!
haha yeah i suspected this might be the case (similar to how the GSR door scuff plates are black, and the CC sedans/Wira sedans are dark grey) so youre gonna be absolutely right.
but to be honest, i couldnt care less. id much rather pay $171 a pair for dark grey ones and save paying an additional $189 on top for a slightly darker colour Im paying less for a pair compared to what mitsu wants for just one side...it will be hardley noticeable. my gsr is charcoal/course grey - so itll blend in perfect, maybe even better than black strips
But for anyone who is looking for new strips, buy the proton ones, and buy a can of black spraypaint (if your handy/patient, unlike myself) and that will total $180 for a new pair

i wouldnt suggest the product "Back to black" . thats the product i used to use on my rubbers whenever they looked a bit faded, and next thing you know they became brittle and cracked - however this may have been a coincidence though and may have been caused by age i guess
anyway i picked up my rubbers today from proton spares, and don't worry - you dont even have to paint them - they already came BLACK , exact same as the original GSR ones. cheering!
They also come with all brand new clips already attached to them, and the clips are identical to the gsr ones as well..
they were $86 each side (GST already included) so totalled $172
