215's just seem a touch big or are they better than 205?????



I am interested in the same question:

Do the guards to be flared to acoomodate the 215 ?

Also interesting that so many people are running 205/ 40 /r17. Not one tyre I have looked for in this size has the right load rating of 85. All are 84 or below.

No issues with this ???

Well I seem to need new tyres, In my garage I have two 215/45 R17 87W Bridgstone potenza tyres that have a bit of camber wear on the inside edges but are still ok to use (I would put them on the rear) and two 215/40Z R17 tyres with about 20% tread left on them on the front of my car.(the rear two have about 1% tread left) what I would like to kno is will the differences in size of these tyres make a difference? like if I am to buy two more new tyres which size will I be best to go for?


The different sizes of the two tyres you have will put strain on your drive line leading to some drive line components failure.
To be double sure, get a tape measure and measure the circumference of the tyres if two have a bigger measurement than the other two dont use them on a awd.

I have been running 215s for ages with no issues, other than some light scrubbing when doing a U-turn at full lock.

have a look at some sumitomo HTR Z2 they are very nice in all conditions and cost $145 per tyre so i think you cant go wrong for that

I have them on my Liberty GT. They came with the OZ rims.

They are absolutely crap. After being on potenza re050a's the car handles like a piece of shit.

No corner grip in the dry even, and shithouse in the wet. Pretty well the entire benefit of AWD is lost with these tyres. I will be replacing the now as we have a baby and i dont want the Mrs driving in the wet on these things, she doesnt have the skills to get out of trouble.

Only upside is in the wet i can throw it sideways and hang big 4wheel powerslides round bends :wink: Fun, but not the point of tyres on a performance road car.

Sumitomo = Sloppihomo :lol:

Unless you drive a stocker and dont give a crap about driving and never intend to put your car through its paces and only need some black round things on your car then Sumi's would be fine.
For anyone whos spent any $$$ on mods and is into performance then buy the best tyres you can, they will make more difference to your car than 1/2 the other crap people spend money on.

Example: Prodrive tested a Subaru WRC on road tyres vs a standard Wrx on WRC spec rally tyres over a test stage and the standard $40,000 Wrx beat the $1,000,000 World Rally Car.

The wear rating on the Azenis is quite high (ie, they're a lot harder than most 'true' r-compound semi slicks) which is why a lot of people don't count them as an 'R tyre.'

I ran semis on my car constantly (Kuhmo V70As) and probably wouldn't recommend them .. they wear far too quickly, and really go off after being heat cycled a bunch of times. They're almost dangerous when they're cold, offering very little grip.

On the other hand, with a bit of temp in them, they were brilliant - transformed the car completely through corners and on the track. It's a trade-off.

I'm running the Hancook K104s at the moment and I'm not very impressed with them. Lateral grip is pretty low, but they do seem pretty good in the wet. It's hard to judge - I'd had semis on the car for the previous 10k kms, so I can't expect the same performance I guess.

I'm going to try the Azenis RT615 next, and hopefully find a good compromise.

Thanks but you still didnt answer my question, It doesnt matter now any way as I bought a set of Bridgstone potenza Adrenalin in 215/40/17, I am well aware that AWD cars dont like different sized tyres front and rear. What I was wanting to know is as I have 4 goodish tyres, 2 of each size, I was wanting to kno which of the two sizes will be best to get another two of to make a matching set and run on my car in terms of; putting the speedo out, economy, acceleration etc.

eh I've got the K104s.. coming from the Falken Ziex 502 and Silverstone tyres, I find them good so far.

anyone know anything about michelin pilot preceda ugly lookin tyre but apprently they are kick ass... read an article apparently they won best tyre in there class last yr same class as k104's like i said dont look flash but they do what they are sposed too....?????? porb give'em a whirl 170 a tyre

Dont forget guys, you pay for what you get with tyres- but you can also pay heaps for SHIT, so go with tyres that have been proven!!

im using Hankook RS-2 (Z-212s) which so far have been awesome. Much better than the Bridgestone RE-711 which I had previously, and they were a very good tire also...

I've used 3 sets of Toyo T1S (which are called T1R now) in the last 8 years and I definitely would buy another set. I only had the RT215's on the front of my GSR Galant, so couldnt comment on a whole set.

I've had Advan 032R's on my old VR4 and once warmed up were good, but they do wear out real quick!!

If the Toyo R888's perform as good as the T1R's do, and last half as long, then that would be my pick- as a matter of fact, these are what i'll be running on my cyborg for the street.

The 215x35x18 T1S I was running on my old VR4, were $315 each- but they lasted 3 times as long as other tyres i've owned, and had to replace after 5000kms (cheap shitty federals)

Handling in the wet, is as if you are driving in the dry.

I have a set of r888 for the track,they are awesome tyres but are starting to wear after limited use,I dont think i would run them as street tyres as they are hell expensive and not the greatest in the wet.

About 6 months ago, but I went there yesterday to get a wheel alignment and you can still get them, im getting some for my 17s. :)

Rather than start a fresh thread, I thought that i'd bring this one up from the dead...:D

Anyhoo, I'm looking for some serious rubber that I can use on the street, track and dragstrip. AIR is 'apparently' (HAHA) re-opening later this year and I want to rip it down the dragstrip after a four year absence. I have heard that semi's aren't the best choice due to their stiff side-walls but I plan to do more trackwork. Is there a compromise?

I recently purchased a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE55 semi-slicks for the rear and really want to use these on all four corners. I'm just really wanting to know if anybody has run semi's on the dragstrip and how well they stacked up...

tempe have a few sets of RT 215's their selling them for $700 in 215 45 17 if anyones keen. I nearly bought a set or R888's instead but at $1260 and much faster wearing, i decided the RT's would be good enough for the street.

their pretty average on the drag strip as they have very stiff side walls and dont really grip to their potential when cold. Some drag radials like BF's would be much better

Toyo T1S are a excellent budget road rtちめtrack day tyre, cheap and work well once you have tyre temp and pressure sorted out.
Currently running Advan AO48's excellent sticky tyres for the track but to expensive for the street
I'm on my 4th set of T1S's for 80 per corner fitted and balanced cant go wrong really.
