God he's got a nerve asking that sort of coin when he picked it up for almost a 1/4 of the listed price. Especially considering the VIN would be dodge. Definitely a buyer beware situation.

Great detective work! This is why I was trying to create a database of known cars. To make it easier for people to work out which ones are dodgy, or have been rebirthed at a later date.

There can't be that many cars around, so with everyone's help, it can work.

Its not really detective work...more like common knowlege,if you have been around long enough, and kept up with cars for sale in this thread, especially when its a rare colour like this car.
If you go back quite a few pages in this same thread you will find the answers, the criticism and whatever else about this and many other questionable cars that are floating around.

Or just listen to those who have been around a long time. No need for a data base.

With a bit of common sense and knowledge...its pretty easy to work out which are dodgy and rebirthed etc etc..most of that info can be found in this thread if you go back through it. The same cars are doing the rounds...its not like there are hundreds of them being shipped in every day.

He didnt buy it from the original seller....a well known Sydney Evo wrecker bought it. This info is in this thread also, where Dre questioned his methods.

OK so I read every page in this thread since 2007. Biggest issue is that 99% of the links no longer work. So I guess its up to the knowledge of the people on the forum to pick the eyes out of the cars that come up.

TLDR: Carry on, great work :)

Seeing as your in NSW It's pretty simple.

If your looking for an early EVO, the first thing to do is look for the yellow personal import approval plate/sticker..

If it doesn't have a yellow personal import approval plate in the engine bay, don't touch it, don't even bother looking at the rest of the car as there is no other way to have one 100% legit in NSW... simple.....

So..

If it has a yellow plate then treat the purchase like you would any other car.. If all numbers etc match up, condition and price are good.. Buy it...
If it has a yellow plate and all matches up but it is in poor condition... Seeing as there very rare, still buy it... LOL...
If it doesn't have a yellow plate regardless of its condition, it currently being rego'd, etc etc etc... Forget it, DONT TOUCH IT !!!

If I personally were to get a yellow plate in nsw, I wouldn't modify ir very far as they are that rare. And yet,if I was to modify a car, I'd get a GSR, deck it out and blow the door off any evo. The evo vin is a bit if a wank if u plan on modding it.

With older personal/low volume imports you've got to be careful because the characters assigned were 17 totally random characters e.g 6a91MP0RTxxxxxxxx and had nothing to do with the original VIN that is on the car. Around 2004 they switched to using the original Japanese VIN and added 6U9000 in front of the original Japanese VIN to turn it into a 17 character VIN e.g 6U9000CD9A000xxxx to stop people rebirthing using the random personal/low volume import VINS previously assigned.

Before you buy a personal import (yellow) or low volume (green) plated vehicle that had random characters instead of the original Japanese VIN within the Aussie VIN, ring up DOTARS to confirm the VIN was assigned to that car you want to buy.

Not all personal import (yellow) and low volume (green/magenta) compliance plates are put in the engine bay, they can be placed anywhere on the chassis which includes door jams, floor pan etc.

My "yellow plate" has the IMPORT VIN as above.

Thanks for the other comments, but I understand the personal import rules, having had one since 2000. However, as I'm looking to buy another, I was trying to track down the histories of the ones for sale and some, for example the white 3 on carsales, I found nothing on. Or perhaps it was on a broken link.

My comment wasn't directed at you, have a read of GSR 95T's post, my comment was for anyone wanting to buy an import.

A metal yellow/green compliance plate with random characters is one of the easiest to rebirth for a number of reasons hence the additional DOTARS check should be done.
