How close is the sensor to the hub. You want it as close as possible without touching (within reason). Failing that you might need to follow the lead that hooks the sensor up and make sure there is no damage to it.

try taking off and replacing all your wheels too, I had a similar problem on my GSR.

I have needed to follow the lead back but I have had issues with abs sensors before. I had my front wheel bearings done and this involves removing the abs sensor. When the abs sensors were put back in they were mounted to far away from pickup on the hub. Made all sorts of dramas for when untill we sorted the problem out.
But adjusting the sensors themselves isn't an overly complex job. You will need the front of the car off the ground and the front wheels removed. If you have jack stands make sure you use them cause you will need to get right under your car. Basically, undo the sensor and and move it as close to the abs pick-up (on the hub) as you can without touching it. Not paper width close but close.
Take it out for a gently spin and brake at low speed (under 40km). If your braking appears to be jerky, you need to get your abs sensors closer....
Hope this helps.. It may not even be the problem, but you will be able to rule sensor adjustment out..

it could be the problem since i just got new bearings in as you said so i'll try with that but i have a strong feeling it's something else.

did u buy the car with no abs and the light always on? or did the light just start staying on and when its on u have no abs?
it could be your abs motor. vr4s have a problem with the abs motor
in the form of a sticky relay - it might be worth having a look at
try this:

From memory, you just undo a few nuts or screws, move it closer and then tighten up...
Have a look how close it is first..
