Ive heard a few things about rust in the roof and so on

But can you guys pitch together and come up with the main things that need to be looked for when buying a CC series GSR/E1,2 or 3..

Thanks.

both 93 and 63?
...i know the '63 gets it with a bit of age

but how much of a problem is it?
full hydraulic lifter replacement?
which would more or less mean the whole head while your there...

These are common GSR (1.8) issues which probably inevitable whether you buy the car with the issues or not:
1) noisy lifters
2) rust in roof
3) clutch pedal box breaking (firewall flexes when pressing clutch and gears dont engage/disengage properly - usually welding it back up or welding on a support plate will fix that no problem)
4) leaking Yoke - leaking transfer case fluid

With evo 1-3 im not sure as never owned one. I've heard they have the lifter noise issue as well - i dont know if its to the same degree as the 1.8 motors though.

I don't know if evo1-3 have the same lifters as the VR4's 4g63 motor, but a couple of mates who i know who have vr4 motors havent had lifter noise...?

This was my advice on EvoOz when I was looking to buy (from Meek I think) and posted asking the same thing:

"Front diff in box weak as piss
Lifters are noisey
Rusty roofs (easy fix)
Turbo too smal and runs out of puff in 3rd

Other than that they can cop a big beating and are fantastic bang for bucks"

The only one I haven't seen much evidence of from my forum surfing and personal experience is the front diff being overly weak.

^^^^ haha beat me to it. I forgot about the pedal box/firewall. That's fairly common.

This is always debated on team4g :)

two options

Option 1) Pro-ma MBL8 oil additive put in after every oil change. Apparently keeps them dead silent. a $32 bottle will last you three oil changes

Option 2) New lifters $214

If you can install them yourself its good, otherwise you'll get slugged on installation.

yep 93's get it too,
its not really that much of an issue unless it just pisses u off,
they can be replaced, they can be cleaned, but this still wont guarantee a fix of the problem

That will be good to kno, I will have to get mine done one day...

On the topic for a sec tho, I think there is a buying guide somewhere that has a comprehensive list of things to look for...
I've had my GSR for a few years now and not a lot has gone wrong with it, has over 300,000kms on it now also.

For the gsr.

Pedal Box Snapping - Not expensive
Cracked firewall - Depends
Master and Slave Cyclinders leaking
Crank Angle Sensor
Idle Control Motor
Window Regulators
Noisy Lifters - Meh, not big issue.
Possible roof rust - touch wood* I've been ok.

"leaking Yoke - leaking transfer case fluid", I think I have or had this problem, I should actually recheck it. Unsure whats required to fix it.

With the roof. not sure if it can be done cheaper but when i inquired about mine i was quoted no more than two grand. They said they put a new roof on, new windscreen as apparently it usually breaks on the swap.

The old, "I can't guarantee it'll come out in one piece"..
If you get someone who is experienced and truly does a good job, they will tell you it's a gimmick to slug you for more money..

It can happen but in most cases, its due to poor skills / wrong technique..

I had my windscreen removed and re-sealed recently by a highly recommended installer, no dramas mate. Straight out, and straight in..

Cheers.

when i was running the 1.8l i tried everything to stop the lifter noise best thing and the only thing that really worked in my car was ( not that i recomend it) castrol magnatech 10w 40 and STP engine treatment can get it from repco and supercheap its cheap worked for about 3000kms and it slowly came back after that my lifters where shocking.
