Well thats the even wussier thing, mines a manual controller.

95% DIY built mechanicals and electricals. The only things I couldnt do myself involved welding (rear AWD floorpan, exhaust, icoola) and specific machining and balancing works. I avoid workshops like the plague because in my experience and from what I've seen on some people's cars is that they'll take your car and money, either take too long or do a rush job, then you dont find out what a bodge job they did until after you've already paid Thats a generalisation though, there are just a handful of good workshops out there worth taking your cars to.

Mines built one complete car add 1 complete Written off jspec gsr + 1x 3/4 rear cut LiberoGT + Complete RSEII frt cut.

Everything was researched then rebuilt before installing, Then awd converted and fabrication done inmy workshop

Only things that hasn't been done by myself is the specialist machining jobs and the rewritten chip in the ecu.

I'm always a research first, ask questions on forums last,
9 times out of 10 you'll find the answer on the net.

Search engine's & buttons are your tools of the trade just like spanners and sockets just learn how to use them and then its Built by yourself.

I'm the same I don't really trust mechanics but I trust what I do hence mines built.

Just a question for you guys do most of you have some mechanic in you, eg did you have a father/mother/uncle that you learnt/leach off or just dived in?

Mechanics it was all over, once i got the 4g63 and 93 engine pdf manuals and the remainder electrical supplements ended up getting dropped on the web that was my only teacher my only guide.

I did go to trades school so wasn't that hard to pick up mechanics when in doubt read the manual first, secondly use common sense.

Built. If I can't do it, I have a mate who can and/or help me out.

No mechanical training whatsoever. Just got stuck in. Modifying a Mitsi is an expensive thing to do if you can't DIY when it breaks

Taught from hanging around my older bother and cousins since I was in primary school My love for cars started whilst working on an old school VB/VC Commodore, a 350 Chev Torana and a monster 454 Premier before I hit my teens I was hooked on Mitsus when I bought my first 2 cars being 1977 LB Lancer sedans, and was dabbling in some amateur rallying and hillclimbing when I built my first 4 cylinder engine. The rest after that is history :twisted: I think the road to a steep learning curve for a lot of car modifiers was paved out of necessity rather than choice. When you simply cant afford to pay for things to get done you end up doing it yourself and the fruits of your labour and love develop over time. There's a distinct passion people have for cars that they have built on their own from scratch, something many people who buy built dont comprehend.

I cannot remember not working on cars & bikes, but I think I was lucky.

My dad was a tinkerer of all things, and an electronics whizz (he was requested by the Queen to fix the TV on the royal yacht when it was in Melbourne in the '60s.)

There was a workshop at either end of the street I lived as a kid, one was just a plain servo, and the other built race cars (Gary Rogers). They both seemed to like having a kid hang around "helping". I learnt heaps from them. Gary let me do my first engine rebuild when I was 8 or 9.

My neighbour at the time built & races rally cars and speedway cars, and he was a boilermaker - he taught me the basics of welding, sheet metal work, basic panel beating.

My best mate at school - his father built scale model working steam trains - machining in general I learnt there.

With that background, I couldn't not be a DIY'er. Later in life (much later) I finished up running a workshop and became qualified as an "Automotive Mechanical Engineer".

(I also have a couple of degrees, and am an ICU qualified registered nurse)

I didn't really know much about my car or cars in general when I first bought it but slowly as I go along I am learning.I never pretend to know more than I do or portray it.If I have a problem I ask Jeff @ Techsport or afterhours or for opinions I head to the net.Just because some of us have the time to work on our cars doesnt make us better than the person who takes it to a workshop.
I wanted a Mitsubishi Evo from the very first time I wanted a car but couldnt afford it so I bought a Mitsubishi coupe until I could.I bought a TME because I loved the look,power and rareness.I always made time for a fellow MITSUBISHI enthusiast whether or not it was "built or bought."
So many ex Subaru,Nissan,Honda wanks upgrading to the almighty mitsubishi are infecting our community with bullshit and causing infighting.
The only right way of owning a Mitsubishi is with a smile,the only right way of being a great community is by sharing that smile with eachother.
If you get corrected or dare I say it disciplined in this or any other Mitsubishi community take it on the chin as you were in the wrong!
I find myself losing interest in this forum lately and the attitudes on here seem to be spiraling down to dare I say it Subaru levels and my comments above seem to be the reason I think why.The mods should spend more time worrying about members of this forum ripping other members off more than the attitudes of forum mods on their own forum
I think it now rests solely on the Mods shoulders to clean this shit up because it isnt any good for us and it is not MITSUBISHI!

There has been a bit of friendly discussion out there lately about building your own car D.I.Y in your shed or in a workshop, or a mixture of both and the cars running great times on the strip and track.

Who out there is a member of what we like to call "Built not bought motorsport"?

Do you think there is any advantages of any one way or a combo of both?

We would like to hear of any D.I.Y. success stories you may have.

I was trying to get some positive responses to an honest question. There HAS been some great success with our beloved mitsus lately and we should be and have been proud of that. Its the pride in our rides that we have built, that we are celebrating.

The majority of people on this forum will help out any new member with questions and what not. Even though they may ask the same sort of question over and over again and however frustrated we may get at them, we will still point them in the right direction with answers, links and tips.Sometimes this may not happen. Im glad that you have helped.

I dont think so and even if they have im sure we have had a pretty good reign on them. We do miss things occasional and do have lives too..Are you sure your on about T4G :?

I am an apprentice mechanic, so I do everything I can myself, except things like painting, panel beating, wheel alignment and when it comes to building up a replacement engine I will give the crank to a workshop we use at my work to get it balanced and get the block rebored etc. I will definatelly ask to be there and see how it is all done tho, when my car was at the panel shop, I was around thereall the time helping him out and learning what goes on. Basicly if there is a place out there that has thousands of $$ worth of special machinery that I cant replicate in my own garage I will get them to do it properly.
I grew up on my Parents dairy farm so thats where I get it from, My old man did everything himself and is into cars, learnt it all himself, he does struggle with what an intercooler does tho!
