cant help you with the wastegate, but the engine light , just go over all the wiring to make sure its all connected properly , even a water temp sensor can cause a engine light , but being a backfire , it could be your airflow meter causing issues , or even a leaking intercooler pipe , plus recheck your cam timing also

Been a while.....56k? Damn! Old girl is still kicking...she just got a new fuel pump, tank and filter....trying to sort the hand brake, some new rear bushes and she will be back on the road!
