G'day,

After success with the clutch issue on my GSR, it's now on to fixing the vibration. One thing though ... in hindsight it might have been better to pay someone $500-600 labour to do that!! URGH!

The last remaining issue is vibration. There's very little at idle, but I get a few sizzles in the dash come 2500-3000 rpm, and then there's quite a lot at 5k, but it sounds more like the exhaust exploding at 5k and it seems like the power is tapering off.

The engine mounts are immac and all tight. The previous owner said he changed the timing belt so I think he didn't stick the screw driver into the side of the block to get that balance shaft right. Does what I've mentioned sound like balance shafts?

Cheers
Alex

Bugger, another major service item :-| It boosts fine ... But I'll stick the old poker in the hole and see if it can reach full depth. If not I guess all the shit on that side of the engine is coming off!

Curse Mitsubishi and it's balance shafts

I bet your timing belt is one tooth out if you get a little vibration under 5000rpm but get some decent noise and vibrations over 5000rpm  Whoever put the timing belt on skipped a tooth and it needs redoing (ie re-alinging all the markers up again) :) Its happened to me once before because I jinxed myself on the forum one day saying that it has never happened to me...

Hey thanks mate, that's very useful information - I figured if it was out a notch the valves would be hitting the pistons?

Yeah the dude's brother did it, and I think he didn't really know what he was doing. I'll get it sorted this week anyways :-) Thanks mate

Na if its one tooth out the valves wont hit the pistons, but the freakin noise of the humming motor scares the shit outta you as you feel like something major is wrong with it  Whatever you do, if you have to drive it to get the timing belt done keep the revs low :)

I'll do the timing belt at home :-) It won't be anywhere near as much of a b#@*! as the clutch was.

How do you locate TDC on piston 1's intake stroke for the purposes of setting the timing?

Mate, do you have the workshop manual? or just do a search in this forum you will find the related pages to show you how to align everything before fitting the timing belt. Basically you cant go wrong if you do it the proper way (and take guess work outta it) by lining up the timing notch on the crank, both balance shafts, and the 2 timing marks on the cam gears.

I got the VFAQ, it seems to be missing that part. I must be missing the engine manual, I couldn't find it. I'll have another look where I got the manuals from. I guess it figures it'd be in there somewhere!

I read through that manual, I'm used to Cordias where you can just check where the dizzy rotor is pointing. From what I read in the manual, if the dowel pins are pointing up and the notches are lined up, this means piston 1 is at TDC just before the intake stroke?

ok i've just finished my rebuild on my evo 2 motor and took it for a test drive last nite.

i'm now experiencing vibration to the whole car when it gets close to the 5000rpm mark.

i know that the timing were all done spot on, so wat could it be?

sounds a bit like the same sympton

Sounds like a balance shaft is 180 deg out, you need to rotate the oil pump sprocket another full turn ... You can have the marks all lined up but if a screwdriver doesn't go into the side of the block, your oil pump sprocket needs to be rotated. That's the situation with my car. Bit of a bitch really ...

Not trying to be a smart ass, but can you please edit your post to say 360 degrees, not 180. If you only rotate it 180 degrees, the timing marks won't line up.

Fair call, I had this argument already. The balance shafts are out 180 degrees. So you have to rotate the oil pump sprocket one full 360 degree turn which turns the balance shaft 180 degrees. You can check the balance shaft's correct position by inserting a screwdriver into the plug hole in the side of the block.

if or when doing this there's a step by step in the pdf manual of the 4g63 engine which is idiot proof.

Hi John, in looking through the VFAQ and all of the manuals in Patrick's collection, I'm pretty confident I've got it right. Everything lines up, hoping to have to it finished tomorrow and running SMOOTH ;-)

Next up maybe some firmer suspension :-D
