Hey guys, i did a search and i found some info regarding blue smoke issues. I realize that i could have a bad stem seal, or turbo seal, but it does'nt happen all the time, and mine is light gray and i thought i seen a blue ting to it when it dispersed:(

This is the second time this has happened that i am aware of;

1) About a month ago, leaving work at about 26 degrees, day after i unhooked my battery, it started to puff light gray smoke, almost looked like normal colour but still light blue, ittermintently. It went away after 3 mins idling(traffic in our parking lot) and 2 mins of driving.

2)Today, just put in iridiums the other day, went for a coffee about 10 mins of driving, parked for 15 mins, than i started my car and light gray/blue smoke again. It's raining out and 18 degrees, we thought it was just condensation until i noticed it left a trail of smoke and i know condensation does'nt do that, i stopped and checked it and it smelled like something burnt and it was light gray/blue color again, than mysteriously went away :confused:.

I'm making a guess that it may be a bad Oxygen sensor?

and no the check engine light has never come on, and yes it works.

Put yourself in my position - Buy a car noone has heard of or seen in your area, and try to get help fixing it. I don't mean to be such a n00b but be patient and answer any Q's i have and i can relay that info to others who struggle like me ;)

Hows your compression? ever done a compression test? at a guess as thats all I can do not seeing it in the flesh and not being able to log it to see everything its doing old Evo bad stam seals would do it though.

Hahhahaa sell the car its a lemon :lol:

Here's my advise Just drive the bloody thing and enjoy it
and keep an eye on oil levels in the engine, end of story.

You could pull your plugs out too determine if it is the engine.

Maybe fire it up when its cold, get the blue smoke, shutdown, and inspect plugs.

Not sure if it will tell you much, but if the plugs are wet and oily, then your burning some oil.

If its nice and clean, then it could be the turbo.

the plugs are clean (white deposit on em) and it happen more times today. i figured it something out, when i turn on the heater it starts to smoke, if the heater is'nt on it ok. It's more white than anything but when it does dispearse you can see a blue ting to it (normal?).

when heater is on it will use heater box from your aircon but thats a water issue unless you've done a head gasket? i.e. head not sealing have you ever re tensioned the head since you've owned it, or at least check tension on the head???

if not get pdf manuals the specs are in there fr replacing and re tensioning the head, if you haven't replaced the head gasket it could be running the stock oem one in which case given the age of it I'd replace the head gasket with a nice new multi layered head gasket like a commetic one.

thankx john, i will check the head when i get a chance.
get this, the rain has stopped and so has the problem. I tried to get it to smoke again, but it won't - even when i turn on the heater.
the car has a HKS high suction filter on it with the RS intake tube, so it positioned very close the the hood vent. Do you think it's sucking some rain and moisture in and fuckin with the sensors? (it was a heavy mist rain)

Also, i have been getting some oil around the turbo's compressor exit flange, but it's been oily around it since i bought it (20,000 kms ago)

if its burning oil ie smoking turbo seal or valve stem seals are the most common.
Opps re quoted

may have some truth to that statement as you've had endless issues since owning it.

You'd have a cloud of smoke behind you if you burnt 1litre in 20k's. Thats a crap load of oil to burn in that amount of k's. Maybe youv'e got a leak aswell? Any oil on your driveway?

Compresson test and leak down test!

Sorry Cody but John's right. Even for a car that's getting old,
and where you have to expect problems due to age/ wear + tear,
your car has a LOT of problems.
My 2c:
Stop wasting money on this car. Just drive it as much as possible
before it dies. In the mean time start saving for something else.

Unfortunately some people just expect a second hand import car to have no issues, others just rebuild the motor when they get it and never have an issue at all.

here's my problem, i'm on vacation and 1,300 km's from home, and there's a big mountain in the way. I'm suposed to be back to work for tuesday.
If my turbo is leaking, what do i need in parts to fix it?

also, if i remove the blades from inside the turbine housings, plug off the oil lines, can i run the can like it has no turbo (except using the turbo as a exhaust pipe) for the meantime?

**update**
I pulled the piping off the compressor housing, and there is oil all over the outlet leading in to the housing. My best guess is i blew the seals.
i got a write up on how to rebuild these turbo's, now i'm in the process of trying to dig up a rebuild kit on a saturday ON A FREAKING HOLIDAY WEEKEND!
Here's the rebuild thread http://www.vfaq.com/...bo-rebuild.html

at idle now, it's lightly showing white smoke, no visible loss of coolant from the radiator. Are these symptoms of a headgasket?

ok, rechecked the torque on the head - 58 ft/lbs and all where good
checked the plugs - clean with white scale deposit
checked radiator and resivoir - no black deposits
checked oil - no milky color, just some bubbles*
*when car is running the valve cover pressures up (took off cap and put hand over hole), but no visible pressure from dipstick tube. (the pvc valve is new, and routed to a catch can for free flow)
the car isn't smoking now, it's steaming lightly - as if it was cold out, and it's 20 degrees out

Do our turbos have coolant running through them?

LOL yes our turbos have coolant running through them
i answered my own question by tracing the lines going to the turbo

So it must be the turbo creating these erratic symptoms.
Steam from the coolant blowin past the seals
Blue smoke from oil blowing past the seals

Here's a Q for anyone who knows;
If i throw some radiator stop leak (small amount i've been told) and some engine stop leak with a fresh oil change, do you think i can make a 1300 km journey climbing to an elevation of 2200m (max of 3200 m) if i continously check and add fluid when needed, avoid boosting and reving high?

well i tried it, the turbo sealed up no problems, i drove for 9 hours. I stopped at 2 am, cause the animals were out. Got up at 5 am to finish the last 4 hrs, and i think my altenator went. Some guy had a battery charger where i was parked, i put in it on charge, charged it to 14 volts, and tried to make it to the next town, 120 km's away, i just made it.... literaly rolled in.

OK i've got another question;
If you voltage spikes to 16 and drops to 12 when you turn on fog lights, than spikes to 16 when they are off again, than after a minute the battery stops charging, is this a sign the altenator is toast? or is it a regulator? if it is the regulator, is that built in the altenator?
