hey guys,
i tried to make it home from my vacation (1300 kms) on a leaky turbo. I got 9 hrs into my journey, and pulled over for a rest. I restarted the car after 3 hrs of resting, and my volt meter was registering 16 volts, and the battery light came on. I flicked my fog lights on, and the voltage came back to 12, when i flicked them off again, the voltage spiked to 16 volts again, than after a minute or so, the needle held at 12 volts, while the car was running. I grabbed my mutimeter, and checked the voltage across the battery terminals, 12.5 volts and slowly dropping. I cross checked the red terminal on the alternator and it read the same as the battery. Do you guys think the alternator has failed, or is it something else. I need to get this fixed, but my car is now 300 km's away from me. I'm hoping you guys might know what it is, so i can get the part, and go to the car an fix it to get it home, THAN SELL IT! :(

also, where is the voltage regulator?

when your car is on, do the lights start to dim more and more until they go off completely? if so, it's you're alternator. but if you jump start it and it runs fine and the lights are good, most likely just a flat battery
not quite a gsr, not quite an evo

Usually when the alternator dies- it dies instantly. Like what olly said, it could be your battery. Keep an eye on it, and just get it home asap

12.5v while the car is running definatly suggests that something isnt functioning correctly... quite possibly a dying alternator... you would want to be reading somewhere around 14.4v...

the regulator is built into the alternator - most mitsi alternators from similar age cars are the same and will bolt up no worries.

When car on, should be around 14 volts
When car off, should be at 12 volts.

Still that isnt really enough to test an alternator. Quite possible that your might want to get your battery tested/checked too. I'd be putting your battery on a charger with a test function.

16v means the regulator isnt doing its job, get your alternantor rebuilt by an Auto Electrition and it will be fixed.

Overcharging usually means the diodes in the rectifier are toast:(

Will boil the battery too.

As was mentioned earlier the alternator is quite a basic and regular product you would be able to buy a new one or reco'd 1 for a eclipse that will bolt straight up.

On the selling comment this sorts out the boys from the men lol well the real enthusiasts any ways ;)

I rebuilt mine cost under 50 bucks new bearing and new brushes grab the pdf manual that covers that alt and its piss easy.

Think of it this way we cant even buy them here for road registration so to have a evo on the road and registered is a bargain for 15g. Enjoy it when you've fixed everything lol

Fix it once, it'll last a while before it dies again.

It's just the age of the car.

is the rebuild kit specific to the alternator, or is it universal? if so, what would be the parts number?

where is the rectifier?

inside...you will have to take it to a specialist. BUT your better off just getting a second hand one from one of the guys of the DSM forums if you want it fixed ASAP.

Otherwise buy a new one.

lol, i wasn't sure what manual, but i did find it.
I got the second hand alternator in the car now, i just got it home from it's delayed return (300 kms away)
she's running fine, the turbo is'nt leaking oil anymore, at least nothing noticable.
I stand by no leak oil treatment, recommend it to anyone with a oil leak of any kind.
