I'm wanting to get a CAMS approved racing harness for the Coupe and am wondering what people recommend/use.

I'd be looking to leave it in the car permanently, and interchange between the seat-belt and the harness for road and track use.

I know there's 4pt, 5pt etc harnesses, some require the installation of eye-bolts in the body and some don't.

Am after suggestions/comments from people on what brands, types, features etc they have found good/bad and what sort of $$$ are involved (obviously from very cheap to very expensive) and what level of installation is required - so that I can get an overall idea of what cost and effort I am signing myself up for.

When you say Cams approved, you will be looking for either SFI rated ones, FIA rated ones or ADR approved ones. If you can find some that have the ADR approval, go for them as they don't have a used by date (but there are very few if any made these days).

If you get SFI or FIA rated ones, make sure they are as close to the manufacture date as possible (ie. if they were made a year ago, you have already lost one year off their "approved" life. Some people do sell old stock at reduced prices because of this, some don't.

With regards to buckle types, I have used the seat belt type, the cam lever type and the rotary buckle type. Go for the rotary buckles, they are by far the easiest and quickest (and usually the dearest).

Try to go for 3" straps where ever possible over 2" straps, try to get a 5 point harness, even if you don't use the crotch strap, you have that option available to you if you change your mind.

Assuming that you don't have a roll cage, then you will need eye bolts in the car and snap hooks/ quick release hooks on the shoulder straps of the harnesses.

The biggest difference I have found in different harnesses are how easy they are to adjust. The better ones are nice and easy, the cheap ones can be real bitches and not want to release to allow you to extend the straps.

The best ones I have had the pleasure of being held in by are in a mates car, they are Willans ones.

I bought these ones to replace the 2" belts I had in my last rally car. I would NOT recommend them. They were pricks to adjust and it was too easy to accidentally catch your arm/ sleeve on the cam lever and release the belts while you were driving.

Is this a mandatory harness that you need to compete in a Cams governed speed event, as there's a very good discussion on E'0Z regarding seatbelts Vs Harness's for the 08 E'0z Nats and there are a shed load of valid points I would be taking in on this discussion before buying any harness.
Ive done many Cams governed speed events and a 4 or above harness definately wasnt manditory to enter the events also consider the discussion I mentioned above and take a good read of it before you buy up.

Just reading the original quote above again, I would not be leaving your harness in the car permanently if it is an everyday car. The less time it spends in a hot and sunny environment, the better.

Correct, that is why mine is always pulled out.
But it does make you wonder about the stock seatbelts that have sat in the sun for years. What is its integrity compared to new?

The only criteria that I’m aware of to make CAMS spec's is it must be within a certain manufactured date to be within the rule’s.
Hence why you see quite often second hand harnesses going for sale on rally forums as they are only good for lower clubman classes where the scrutineering has a bit of leniency for date of manufactured belts.
