I was thinking (and hoping) it could be the centre bearing. What do they do when they fuck up

Centre bearing can sag. When it sags it doesnt keep the tailshaft running true. You'll notice a vibration on take off, sometimes Decel. A Thud while moving could be a uni joint or flat spotted bearing....Maybe a fucked tyre if your lucky.

If it is a thumping noise under hard acceleration then it will be your carrier bearings on the tailshaft. Mine does the exact same thing and mine are shagged.

Actually they can be had for about $75 each I think Barry.
I'll have to check though.
I have a set that Rob bought and the invoice was for $75 each. For that price you might as well have them changed

mine has a similar noise/problem.... its only pretty much stock but when there is hard accel it feels like a back tyre is struggling for traction and there is a thumping noise... its most noticable in third but that may be because it spends longer in that gear so you have more of a chance to notice it... i was presuming/hopeing diff bushes... needless to say i'm very interested in the results as it gives me somewhere to look when i get home
