MatS 4g63t GSR build up
#1
Posted 16 September 2008 - 11:05 PM
It's a 1993 Lancer GSR pretending to be an Evolution3. I bought the car with the conversion done and am about to start tweaking it. Is primarily going to be a daily, that I can take to the track every now and then.
So far from a stock GSR it's had these modifications made by the previous owner:
4g63t from a E3 RS
Digital climate control
Recaro Interior
Turbonetics T3/T4 Turbo
3 Exhaust (turbo back)
Turbonetics Delta II External Wastegate
EVO3 FMIC + Waterspray
510CC Yellowtop twin feed injectors
EVO3 RS Reflash ECU
HKS replica sequential BOV
Full EVO3 Body kit
17" TSW mags (215)
And the 'to-do' list is for me is:
Cusco Zero-2R coilovers with adjustable strut tops
Cusco Carbon Strut Bars front + rear
Cusco H-brace
Cusco brake stopper
PWR intercooler
Ku Engineering plenum + TB
Custom IC piping, including moving air cleaner to front bar
Teil 38mm Wastegate
14mm fuel-rail upgrade with 870cc injectors to suit
Sard fuel regulator
044 pump with surge tank
HKS 264 cam's with adjustable gears (new belt obviously)
Autronic or EVOlink PnP ecu (recomendations?)
Replace turbo (still undecided on which one)
Turbo smart Duel port valve
Alumminium raidiator
Xtreme Heavy duty cushion cermanic button clutch
Xtreme Chromemoly Flywheel
COP setup (mainly to clean the engine bay)
Replace wheels (not sure waht with yet)
Brake upgrade (AP racing and Ksport/D2 seam to be all there is)
With a little audio system aswell:
Polk audio C400.4
2x Polk audio C300.2
2x Polk audio SR124
Polk audio SR6500
Alpine W502e/PXA-H100
It will be a long build, expecting 2 years and work has started already! First thing I did was discover the car! While installing a new head deck, an abundance of extra wires and random harness's were uncovered. An absolute nightmare! blue wire becoming green, then red, then black... exactly what you want to find.....
Only logical solution was to pull it all out, along with wiring and plumbing for an original profec and a 2nd boost gauge (who knows!). Also decided to re-install the alarm, now it and the central locking works Un-fortunately no photos of the spaghetti.
With the electrics working, thought Id play with the suspension a little. The car sat at an illegal height, so in order to pass rego I had to get it raised.or buy coil-overs After a little delivery time and under 1.5hours installation, the Coil-overs and some strut braces were all in! I was really surprised with how easy it was! We used a set of Cusco Zero-2r's and All I can say is wow! Huge improvement over the previous setup (lowered springs and generic shocks it looked like). Even before theyve been aligned/set-up properly, the car now has a much more defined feel (if that makes sense ). Have not gotten onto the track yet, but the spirited drive to work is much more enjoyable. Few photos attached.
With a love for music, no not the doof doof doof kind, I set about installing some speakers. My other ride (VS holden statesman) was setup for sound quality and with the 2nd hand market for such cars been so dismal, I couldn't justify leaving it all installed. Out it all came and a big hammer to try force it into the lancer (minus a few components I guess).
Decided on using an Alpine double din-screen, primarily for its ease of use (nice big buttons and bright display), Supported by a pxa-h100 imprint add-on. The statesman ran a pxa-H701 processor which has 32bands of tuning + time alignment + phase control per channel (I was running all 8 channels), was an absolute tunning nightmare! The time and knowledge (or $$ to pay someone) needed to set it up properly was horrific. The H100 is a more advanced sound processor (100bands per channel iirc) but is self tuning via a laptop/microphone configuration. Hopefully the result will be good; I don't think I want to go the h701 route again! Also ditched the standard supercheap battery, in favour of a Soundstream 700cca unit. To the left of it you can see the fuse set-up for the amplifiers.
The noise makers were taken from the statesman; Polk Audio Signature reference 6.5" splits J I couldnt say a bad word about them, beautiful sound. Plan is to use these in dynamatd doors (factory locations) and the tweeters installed in the lower dash (using brackets, in the factory 4 spots). After hearing a setup configured this way, I was very surprised! The sr6500 are bi-ampable and will be using all the 4channels from the C400.4 with no rear speakers.
For the sub-bass frequencies, Ill be using a pair of Polk Audio SR124s, a single voice coil 12 driver from the signature reference range. These are also from the Statesmans setup and were initially bought to keep a SR theme. They do the job superbly and so no need to change
Ive not been a fan of the wooden box in the corner of the boot installs that are every getting about; it just doesnt look good imo. The last 3 installs Ive done, I managed to incorporate fibreglass enclosures with minimal fuss, so makes sense to continue with this car. Id built a similar setup for my brothers E3, so I did have the chance to learn from the mistakes, hopefully make this job easier J and if anyones interested in doing something similar just shoot me a PM. Attached are some stages of the installation and the final outcome, Finished in Zantex vinyl, I think it looks pretty good. There is also room for a space saver wheel under the amplifiers

H brace
Intake manifold + TB
FMIC
Wastegate
Fuel regulator
New oil feed line + fittings
What seams like 100mtrs of silicon vacuum hose
The car needs to have a full inspection done by the RTA this coming week, so nothing is going on until then. For those in Canberra, it going over Dickson for a re-test *sigh*. Failed the first time for been too low and coil-over locking nuts werent properly marked (we measured it @ 120mm clearance and I used white paint instead of yellow.).
As soon as it passs (which it will ) its off to get the intake and FMIC fitted up and the custom inter-cooling piping done.

Cheers dude, I couldn't find a thread on yours? have you got some photos of your setup?
nothing better then fixing it yourself and doing most of the work yourself.

Yeah 'extra' wiring really did suck, but i now know the car very well I like to do as much as i can, but sometimes need others... can't weld Stainless Steel.... yet
very nice work..
how much did you pay for the coilovers?
~$2600 I ordered them with a bunch of other items.

heres a pic of mine.
what are the rms figures of your components?
One of these: C400.4 4X 75wrms@4ohm (14.4v)
Two of these: C300.2 1X 450wrms@4ohm (14.4v)
Setup right, that's more then enough power
That's a mighty big Capacitor you have there... whats the rest of the setup?
Those sub boxes look pretty good! How much did they end up costing you? Not interested in making another one by any chance?
I'd be happy to help you out in making one/two. It's fairly straight-forward. But really time consuming (especially in cold weather)
Foil,tape,brushs,gloves ~$50
Matting ~$60
Resin + catalysit ~$180
Filler (q-cell) ~$50 (comes in a VERY large bag. i used 1%)
MDF/pine ~$100
Zantex + glue $120
So all up for about $550 the boot can be done like that. Of cause that doesn't factor in any labour. I see your in the ACT, i got my FG from ACT fibreglass supplies in Fyshwick, Cheapest place to get it and he's a great guy.
If your keen shoot me a pm or message on MSN ([email protected]) and I'll knock you up a step-by-step. Or better still Hold a BBQ/drinks/build day for some locals and make them do it for you

yeh its a 3 farad, they say the more the better.One of these: C400.4 4X 75wrms@4ohm (14.4v)

one 75rms X 4 running my speakers
two 1000rms X 1 mono's running the subs, also 1000wrms each @ 2 ohm.
the problem with our cars is the boot room. otherwise i would've made larger boxes and blown everyone away with the bass. but unfortunately it will never perform at its peak.
having said that, our cars probly arent made for systems lmao. I luv em too much though.
yours looks great tho. you would've had a boot if you made a false floor for your amps, which i think wouldnt be a bad idea

I'll get photos of the boot we did for my brothers car; subs in about the same spot but a flat floor and amplifiers 'walled off' at the start of the wheel archs. Loads of usable boot space....
As for the cap, tbh i'm not a fan of them. I had dimming head lights in the statesman when i was running ~3000wrms, a cap was recomended. Admittedly it helped a bit. But in the end a good battery (optima yellow top) and upgraded Alternator charge wire (4ga) solved the problem. So sold of the cap

Discovered that my car with the cusco zero-2r's at maximum height are just the right height to pass inspection stroke of luck there!
Also found out that replacing the valve stem seals with the head on, is a PITA ffor the rear valves! But very do-able now that I've got the right tools
Final problem for rego: When I bought the car it had no tyre placard none of the mitsu dealers in canberra weren't able to help with a replacement, none to order through their system they kept saying.
Came across a part number listed on this site for an E2 placard (MR197129) and ordered it for a whopping $3.80 through a sydney dealership! So finally passed and ready to go
Let the fun begin

hehehe, we factored the false floor in while making my boot setup (very similar to this one) boot space = FTW

I'm in the A.C.T. so laws might be different, All I needed was a contiuous yellow paint line through the main thread, height lock ring, lower mounting assemblly (if that makes sense).

Fair point, Yep i passed with coil-overs.

Theres a few places that are allowing them to be passed at the moment. (Which im sure is a ACT thing)
and see i worked out how to get onto this forum Mat
