I do have access to a data logger, can it be used to set the timing?
I know for sure that my harmonic balancer is way out so there is no point using it as a refernece at all.

The notch will be in exactly the same place as all harmonic balancers Richard? What do you mean by way out?

the big bolt in the end has come loose a couple of times and has flogged out the key way. I have the timing gear in the right place as I replaced the worn one but the harmonic balancer has a fair amount play in it so thats why it is likely to be way out. It is something that I was going to purchase new upon rebuilding the motor however it "runs ok" with it like it is so I havent bothered getting one for it.

Running on borrowed time hey Richard watch out or it will catch you out and cost you ten times more for thinking its OK.
Issue neglected like this always seem to bite you in the ass and the worst timing possible.... like when you've just paid a ton of bills and have 0 cash left.

Ah I get ya now... yeah mate you know the right thing to do. Get a new harmonic balancer AND an ARP bolt 207-2501 pulley bolt (cause yours would be crap to use again) and then loctite the bitch in at minimum 120-140Nm ;D

Na its all together and running fine at the moment, I keep the cover off so I can keep an eye on the cam belt, the last one was in shreads from it moving about to much, It hasnt moved since I did it last. (locktite ftw) The whole motor is coming out soon so there is no point doing anything that isnt needed, I was just interested in how I could check the timing just to check it!
