Balance shafts spin twice the speed of our engines, so at 8000rpm, they see 16000rpm and such failures are somewhat common.  I consider them a liability, if you are not required to keep them (as happens in some competitive racing classes), always get rid of them!

#328643 International Facebook Presence

Posted by leon r on 25 March 2016 - 05:31 PM

I got fed up with lack of any active clubs for these vans on Facebook, so I started my own:

https://www.facebook...37020199659249/

For now, everyone can add members, please join and add anyone you think might be interested!

I want to keep focus on modifications and racing. US members will probably focus on engine swaps (since we aren't as lucky you guys ;)).

Hope to see you on Facebook!

We have all the same laws in US, some are federal and some are state. Since emission controls are federal laws and all police force works ether for state or cities/towns, cops very rarely enforce cat laws. However, what they do in my state is even worse, we are not allowed to modify our exhaust louder than stock! And some cops are very strict about it! That is why I have 3" downpipe that goes into 3" electronic cutout, connected to a stock Summit exhaust ;). So my Summit has two modes: stock quiet or OPEN DOWNPIPE!

But that aside, would cops really harass RVR? To most of them, it is just another minivan and who would modify a minivan ;)

I also dig the "beater" look, it embarrasses other cars even more!  But my is all natural :)

#327486 Auto swap into a manual

Posted by leon r on 11 February 2016 - 02:22 PM

This is becoming a common trend in US for drag racing DSMs.  Automatics are more consistent and cheaper to build/maintain, especially once you get above 600hp territory.

But they are definitely less fun for a street/autox driven car.   I just converted my Eclipse Spyder from FWD/Auto to AWD/Manual:

The only sensible way to do this is to have a parts cars next your car and transfer the parts over.  Most professional mechanics will not tie up two bays for such project, so you have to do it yourself.  I highly recommend switching the engine harness!

#327427 fuel cut question

Posted by leon r on 09 February 2016 - 03:31 PM

Another factor which determines fuel cut is ambient temperature, in the winter, we can see fuel cut as low as 14-15psi! But you guys probably do not need to worry about it :)

Fuel cut is such an old subject in US, because it was completely removed by all modified ECUs/chips since they late 90's. Why not run one of those chips?

But I just got FP Red turbo :)

#304965 Fuel starvation?

Posted by leon r on 27 July 2014 - 02:07 PM

The problem with looking at your AFR for this type of diagnostic, is the that just about any type of "event" will look the same on the gauge or logging chart.

I am actually logging my fuel pressure, so I get real live data, as I race. I am seeing fuel starvation that starts around 350hp. But that isn't related to turning, as it happens at drag strip and on the dyno :).

Aside from having fuel pick up on the "wrong side" for right turns, our tanks are divided by a "hump" to give clearance for the driveshaft (thus, the "sadle bag" name). To bring the fuel to the right side, our tanks use syphon system that uses fuel return form FPR as a primer. When working properly, the system is actually pretty effective. But is someone disables it, you will have fuel pick up problems.

To be safe, I never race with less than half a tank of fuel.

Thanks, Deepsouth!

I finally installed the Momo seat:

I kept the original sliders so it made heavy (about the same weight as the factory seat). But I am doing this for handling racing, as stock seat has ZERO lateral support!

#303210 EGR valve located?

Posted by leon r on 23 June 2014 - 01:24 PM

Jay, I have been noticing that more and more new engines are dropping EGR system, but some still do use it.

On our engines, you can see the "clean spots" where injectors spraying fuel. It would be EVEN WORSE if this was DI engine!

Some argue that EGR gives you better fuel economy. There is some science to back up this claim, but real word numbers do not back it up.

Plus, any gains are eventually offset by gummed up engine...
