Ive cracked yet another bell housing , its the 2nd in 6 months !!! Id like to put it down to sheer hp but thats just dreaming i know the culprit of the first housing cracking but the 2nd one im thinking has been caused by putting in a solid front engine mount and not doing the rest of the mounts.
Whats everyones thought on this ?

Dude that sucks.

I have only heard that not having that backwards bolt in can do it.

Maybe crank/gearbox its not aligned right.
This it adjustable on valiants and fords. But mitsi dont have a adjustment afaik.

Way to check is ensure gearbox turns easy with engine off and in gear and clutch in. Wheels up

Have you got, or are you using, the sleeves which locate the box to the block? Without these the box can move back and forth causing problems.

following is something Ive always done and was taught by a bloke that help noah build his boat.

install box onto the block as normal but only put bolts in finger tight......turn over engine on the starter for a while with clutch depressed...couple of seconds. then tighten two oppossing bolts turn over again the same way and tighten the rest. this was on rwd cars that have a spigot into the crank ...but I still do it on these

That was the cause of the first cracked housing but this newly cracked one had all the sleevs double checked and all good

It was fine until i did the front mount to prothane then i started to have shift problems , this week they cleared up but yesterday i noticed transfer case oil leaking so i did yoke fix last night and thats when i spotted the cracks. My thought was maybe because the engine is mounted very tight now and the gear box isnt that it might have twisted causing the cracking  It was installed correctly and was all aligned nicely so im just a tad confussed and a little pissed of with this car toying with the idea of selling as much as it would hurt to do!!!

Bellhousing will only crack due to misalignment.
If any of the bolts has worked loose at all it will increase the chance of cracking by a great deal!
I've been running all four Prothane mounts for a couple of years now with zero issues.
Do you have the bolt the threads in from the engine side installed?

i thought there should be a threaded stud coming out of the block thru the bell housing , is that what your talking about ? There wasnt anything originally there so nothing got put in there . Ill do some searching to see what it looks like to compare with mine , either way it was all coming out soon but this has justy hurried it along

You can see the hole in the bottom right of the picture above...its under the starter motor.

ok yep i was sure it was for something , i should have done my research instead of just putting it back together . My ******* always gettin me into **** .....
Oh well ill get my bell housing welded up and install the box to the engine out of the car this time

Sorry yeah thanks mate also thanks for the pic i tried without sucess on the google to find some close up pics . Cheers heaps i wouldnt have put, that bolt in if it wasnt for the helpful 4gers on here

Yea its funny.
Without that bolt the box is only half held on. It seems secure because you are putting bolts into the starter but they do not much.

Pretty sure you can get that bolt from heaps of hyundai, protons and mitsi. Anything with a f5m manual gearbox. Probably the f4a auto box cars too

Ill go down the wreckers and source the bolt , it seems now im on a fundraising drive to come up with funds to rebuild box now. Im trying to sort out a daily too being that im dropping it all out i might aswell do some upgrading while im at it and turn it into real weapon try and get into the 11s . Im already getting bored of the power on 1.3 bar damn you power bug stop bitting me hahaha

check this vid out. this guy has a heap of smart vids.
but this diagnosis of his 7bolt failure is cool. the reason is right towards the end... missing bolt on bellhousing.

But he is wrong with his spirit level thing, it even worse as the starter bolts do not tie the block to the box at all. the only bolt holding it together is the one at the top of the engine.

Thats was a really good watch but now im even more worried about my crank
All that damage from just one bolt, thats going to be the first bolt that goes in when i install my gearbox
