    Thinking of buying a RVR

Not to hijack a post but Having driven multiple Toyotas and an old BMW 5 and having to keep my foot on the brake on a cold start when pulling it into reverse.......... My HSGR takes some time to move off when cold, seems to build up slowly when I keep my foot off the accelerator and requires...

    Help required hsgr engine died

Have you checked all of the fuses and fusible links? See the translated fuse covers pinned at the start of this forum

Still Not A Re-build, just fixin' things

No it's not right, it's making a whirring noise. (even though it seems to be running alright) Must have bumped the balance shaft out of timing when I discovered I had the timing belt rotating the wrong way (I hope) (the little arrows said dickhead quite loudly) Now I have to do it again don't I.

    Timing Belt Tensioner Hsg '97

Yes I found the same thing. The replacement tensioner didn't stick out as far as it was supposed to but the alen key, in my case, came out easily. However I installed the timing belt in the wrong direction of rotation and had to swap it around. I think I knocked the balance shaft out of timing...

    Help required hsgr engine died

Weather here is wet and windy at the moment with overnight temps of 0c at times and daytime 11c we have a fire going all the time (its cold for us)

    Help required hsgr engine died

You have TWO? Masochist! ("Crack sensor" located about a hand span below the belly button) I don't suppose it is an ignition fusible link that has blown? See pinned post for translated engine fuse covers. I suppose the second HSGR is/was working OK as it is a lot of work pulling out crank...

    Timing Belt Tensioner Hsg '97

How did you check it? If you get it wrong it can be expensive later on if the hydraulic tensioner runs out of travel. You can get a special tool from Meek which is a must have for this job and is not expensive. I assume you also replaced the other balancer belt which is apparently often...

    Timing Belt Tensioner Hsg '97

When I did mine there was more than one position where the "screwdriver" went in more than 25mm I turned the balance shaft until the tool would not go in and then turned the sprocket one more turn as described. I think the manual implies that is the correct spot. Also note that both the...

    Timing Belt Tensioner Hsg '97

The plug (which is a short bolt) is on the back of the engine along the line of the balance shaft housing. It is inboard of what I think is a bracing strut and you can get to it (only just) from the LH wheel arch but it is hard to see from there If you get underneath you will be able to see it...

    Timing Belt Tensioner Hsg '97

How did you adjust your tensioner? The instructions in the manual are very hard to do I just kept increasing the belt tension in small amounts until the pin became loose, tightened up the pulley bolt, turned the motor over twice and left it for at least 15 minutes then if the pin was still loose...

Still Not A Re-build, just fixin' things

All back together, working and no loud bangs so must have the timing right. No coolant or oil leaks evident after running around town Maybe take it for a test run to Mt Gambier tomorrow (about 100k away)

    Thinking of buying a RVR

RVR and fuel economy ??? Certainly not with the turbo motor and I wouldn't expect the n/a to be much better.

    Help required hsgr engine died

I had similar/same problem with mine. (I did have a spark) which I think was due to both cam and crank sensors It has been OK for 2 years now but with intermittent faults you never really know do you. Check the sensor plugs are in and making contact OK and check the earth connection roughly in...

Still Not A Re-build, just fixin' things

Euroexport tool was great to use made the valve seal replacement job a pleasure. Old seals were shot. Haven't taken the head off the motor, it's going back together and the low compression can wait until next time. Have spent much time doing things on VR4 and going to Melbourne with daughter...

Still Not A Re-build, just fixin' things

Well bigger hammer worked well to get the retainers out (basically just like a long socket with magnets to catch the keepers) but the tool geometry and the way the spring retainer is fitted means its not going to work to replace the springs because the inside of the tool hits the valve stem...

Still Not A Re-build, just fixin' things

Head is still on Apparently I just need a bigger hammer to make the tool work. Even bigger than this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEo8wtB0Rpk Ahh! I hate hitting things with hammers but if I have to...

Still Not A Re-build, just fixin' things

I took all of the covers and timing belts off and watched the water drip out of the water pump gasket I also have a flash bike/car pump and will try that.(what a good idea)(See old dogs can learn new tricks) I have decided not to pull the thermostat housing off just yet. I might have fixed...

Still Not A Re-build, just fixin' things

It came and has been discarded. Serves me right for being a cheapskate. It would be really good on something with weaker valve springs, but no good at all on the RVR motor. Couldn't really compress the spring at all with nearly my whole body weight. There isn't anything better! I will just...

I'll be flash I think Now have to take off Thermostat housing to replace o ring on other end of tube running along front of motor as I have a small leak there too. Does it ever finish?
