I'm looking at 97 RVR 2L non turbo with auto transmission.

I’m not too keen about the auto transmission, but this will be a daily car.
How reliable is the gearbox for these and transfer case. It has roughly 170xxxks on it.

As far as I'm aware, the automatic for the '97 auto was updated and before that, i hear they were quite bad, but are fine in the '97. Check for usual roof rust as these get rust in the roof and under the bonnet. Looks like the factory didn't paint the metal before using sica and rust is very common. Then again so are evo 6, lancers and most mitsubishi cars made back around then.

Check for noisy lifters and clean (full) oil, same for the trans.

Good luck!

The non turbo auto box is ok for a daily non turbo. Cheaper to run. Don't turbo it later. The box won't handle it. Totaly different inside the box.
Cheers

I'm very familiar with the 4g engines just not the RVR car itself or auto transmission.

This will only be a daily. I don't plan to turbo but maybe a manual conversion if I end up getting it.

Can I tempt you with a Legnum instead?
See the for sale section!

Nice car but I've already got a joy rider in the garage. I would like at least one fuel efficient car.

With a 4cyl North/South crossmember, you can bolt a 4G63 into a Legnum :)

I had an N/A RVR... was gutless! Wasn't that economical to run either. The turbo Auto I had so much more balls, even in stock form- and had about the same fuel economy believe it or not.

Not to hijack a post but
Having driven multiple Toyotas and an old BMW 5 and having to keep my foot on the brake on a cold start when pulling it into reverse..........
My HSGR takes some time to move off when cold, seems to build up slowly when I keep my foot off the accelerator and requires 1500 to 2000 rpm to get going if I'm in a hurry.(in reverse that is)
It seems OK when warmed up but just wondering if this is normal behaviour?
My drive has an uphill slope too.

Make it a habit to put the shifter in each gear for a few secs when it's cold.
This will prime up the convertor & valve body. It's not a fluid temp issue.
Yeah reversing out of a steep driveway when cold is a bitch.
Cheers
