20g upgrade, thoughts?

Help Support 4GTuner:

Thing is the stock td05 hotside wheel will restrict what the 20g compressor can do when you start to wind it up. A stock td05 hot wheel cant flow what the 20g compressor wheel is capable of delivering.
That why most the yanks clip the wheels, same as people on here that have made good power up top.

That’s the idea of clipping, they cut a few degrees of the tip of the blade to let the exhaust gas past and increase flow. With some sacrifice to spool, but when not going too savage amount of clipping, it isn’t meant to decrease spool that much. Most the 20g’s available in America from the major venders are clipped to some extent.

And there’s lots of TD06 variant wheel's i saw a list somewhere where Forced performance put them in order, wish i could find it again.
I could be mistaken here, but the td06sl2 wheel was meant to be the smaller of the bunch but certainly bigger than a stock td05 wheel.

The bloke who works at rpw in perth put a gtpumps td06sl2-20g on his 2L evo with camtech 264 cams and he felt i was too laggy on a 2l and was selling it and wanting to go the the gt pumps td05-20g for more punch down low.

I asked him a few q's about it when it was for sale...
I guess it depends what his definition of lag was and how much he wanted up top. He said it didn’t wake up till 4K, but i didn’t ask if that was full boost or just when it started to make decent torque as it spooled.

this would be the better choice:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Turbo-Compre...=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3effb4dc7e

hotside piping can be substantially reduced & a smoother flow path etc, but obviously wont look stock and you may need to go ext gate.

And yes I've had the same idea before, buy this kit as well as a rebuild kit from kandodynamics and give a shop just the cartridge to work on (rebalance, clip the turbine blade & reseal): this way you can put it together and save on some labour costs.
As johny said this will still set you back over $500 no matter which way you look at it but its better to keep a MHI turbo than 'upgrading' to a chinese one!

if you make the trust td06 compressor housing face down (or the other 3 inch inlet cover for that matter), and run your intercoolercooler piping under the manifold, why would you need to go external gate if you are keeping you mitsi internally gated exhaust housing?

Check out the forced performance website. The hta68 is a tdo5 looking but flows like crazy. I think it was rated at 45+lbs/min. They will not let people know whats inside. I have seen a car on yiutube that runs 10's with this turbo.

you can retrofit internal wastegate brackets if you like, but yes probably a better idea to just get the ported td05 cover if staying internal gated.

Yeah but that car ran 10.6 on a E316g, then 10.3 after. So the turbo didn't make the car alone.
The secret is to find out what in the hotside, otherwise you buying a stock td05 reat and it wont flow that. There were posts around where Someone recons they spoke to Aniel from FP and he said its a similar size to stock exhaust wheel but flows more. He wouldn't say what it is. you may have seen it on the US forums?
Fair enough but you should tell people what they are getting! I'd be pretty hesitant to fork out the $$ and not know your buying.
Like its a secret anyway the first thing id do if i got it was pull it apart and figure out what it is.

Just did some sums:

20g kit - $120
Genuine Mitsu rebuild kit (from Kando as well) - $100
Shipping for the above - say $30?
Comp wheel balancing & turbine blade clipping - $250 (HyperGear in Melbourne)

Total = $500.
You can buy from Kando a new MHI 20g compressor+cartridge kit for $500+freight.

But are they cartridges as reliable as a genuine mitsi one? The say hey have a larger bearing, so they are different.
Mitsi cartridges last forever so at least your rebuilding something you know works.

i remember only just a few short years ago you'd be hard pressed to get a 20g for anything less than $1300 (new)
