I'm looking to change my current 4 pin ignition coil over to the more common 3 pin which means i will also be changing the ignitor from a J122 (5pin) to a J722t (8 pin) ignitor.

I have been doing some reading and it appears that it isn't as simple as just swapping in the j722t and coil and rewiring. something to do with the tacho driver needing to be in the coil for the early model.

if i change the tacho to a later (aspec) tacho will that fix the issue most of the DSM guys are having?

has anyone done the swap successfully before?

only difference between the 2 types of coil packs are the tacho wire/sender ..

again same with the ignitors one has tacho out put...

what problems are you having?

I know the differences between them. the guys in the states are changing their ignitor and leaving the 4 pin coils in I want to go the next step and put the 3 pin coils in

Is there something wrong with the coil pack in it now Craig. If not I'm gonna dob to Troy :p :p :p

tim I was having spark issues with them before the motor let go, it was misfiring alot after replacing plugs and coils. I'm also using the aspec inlet mani and wanted to mount the coils in the factory location.

coil should have been leads. i want to get it running right, i don't want it to be misfiring on a new motor

i have had the same coil packs since stock.. gone through several different boost/na setups and i haven't had a problem... might i suggest moving the coils and ignitor pack to a cooler position...

NO TOUCHY TOUCHY! UNTIL IT GO VAROOM!

Haha!
The the boy alone, he's got plans....

Nah it's all in the name of good fun, but if you're really obsessed with changing to an 8-pin power transistor ignitor I'll check it out man, but as far as I can recall, when I changed to 3-pin coil plug there was no need for it, and the two T's are right, you really need to get the car running first to double check things anyway.
Like Jay said, the fourth wire is a tacho output, and I'm not sure if the pre-face lift would be the same but the tacho in my GGSR still worked, I forget the reason why as it was so long ago, but I think the ECU receives the tacho signal from somewhere else (I don't have my schematics handy). In any case, stuff changing the tacho, if your car is as you say, it won't change anything anyway lol
Not a big deal to be worrying about, it'd take about 1-2hrs to sort it out worst case scenario, and that's including the time taken to changing the hardware! haha
Hang on, I won't get started on talking about time taken to perform certain tasks else I know where this thread is going to end up! LOL

Basically From memory on your 8 pin igniter plug you will have two wires from the the ecu to igniter. Then you will have two wire output from igniter to coil packs. There is an earth i think as well ,but the white wire on about the middle igniter terminals is the tacho wire.

Of course on the 4pin coil plug setup you wont have the white wire on the igniter pack

The coil pack 4pin plug wires are black/white-main ign power.
the two yellow wires are from the igniter pack.and the white wire is for tacho output

so when you go from 4 pin to 3pin plug just move the tacho wire from the coil pack to the igniter plug.

I found all this out when i put my first vr4 magna into a 1988 magna elite back in 1995,and i wanted to get the digital dash working.the electronic dash was funky for its day and the bar graph scale went from orange to a red zone at 6000rpm.but nowdays its a bit tacky looking.

I could of told you all that, Craig!

remember when we pinned out the loom in the red car!
the CCT had the tach out from the coil and the evo/GSR j22T ignitor has it on the centre pin.

You have my phone number don't you!

but remember

NO TOUCHY TOUCHY! Craig

i knew all of that already troy, i reada the scematics. I had swapped it in the past but for some reason it didn't work...and i'll touchy touchy if it needs it!
