Damn man what happened?

dropped a valve.slowly building up parts now.hanging out to get it back on the road.wasnt even revving it either

Excuse my limited knowledge here but what does it mean to drop a valve?
As in the collets came out of the retainer somehow by itself?
I didn't know that could happen!

sometimes the head of the valve can come away from the stem & hammer the piston & head.
