Hey guys,

I currently have a 4G15P powered Proton Jumbuck, and I have a VR4 4G63 sitting there, now, without unbolting both donks and going through the whole process of trying to fit the damn thing in, before I even bother and start paying my dodgy mechanic slabs of Bundy to do it, will the two switch? Are the engines Width and Depth (Not so concerned about height, that's what they made angle grinders for, hole in bonnet, s'all good!) so great that it could make a swapover a pain the rear end?

Cheers dudes,

The Jumbuck has the same engine bay dimensions as a CC Lancer, so techinically yes the Vr4 engine will fit in the engine bay, you will need to either customise the VR4 cam side mount to make the engine sit even or the ideal thing is to buy an EVO1/2/3 cam side engine mount and bracket

But.... you will still doo extra parts to get it running such as a alternator, starter motor, power steering pump, the jumbuck A/C wont fit on the VR4 engine, 6bolt flywheel that will fit in the jumbuck gearbox, ecu, wiring, intercooler and piping, AFM and intake pipe, get the exhaust made up... plus more that i cant think of at the moment

It actually works out cheaper to prob buy an EVO1/2/3 half cut and use EVERYTHING off the cut... wiring, bolts, the lot

Great, new shopping list:

  • Alternator
  • Starter Motor
  • Air Con Pump
  • Power Steering Pump
  • Water Pump
  • Idler Pulleys
  • Tensioners
  • Loom
  • I have a VR4 Turbo ECU..that should do?

Plan was to go N/A for now, however, turbo conversion may come later. I bought a N/A 4G63 for this reason.

Will the Turbo ECU detect lack of turbo/lack of boost and detune to a stock tune?

Or flog it off for 1k or so and throw an extra 2k and buy an EVO1/2/3 front cut

least then u can use the EVO dash, climate control, bigger turbo, bigger inj, awd gearbox, looms, exhaust, cooler and piping, mounts, k frame & crossmember

Less hassles and you know all the parts are there

Don't really care for turbo, just another part that can break. I use my Ute as a Ute, and generally I'm going through mudholes bullbar deep, water windscreen depth, stuff like that. Last thing I need if mud is getting in, is to have it rammed into the donk.

Dash don't bother me, I like the Proton one, as it has a lot of mods done to it for the radio and light gear in the Ute.

i have a 6 bolt flywheel and starter to suit a front drive gearbox, if you will swap for the awd ones.
otherwise 93-99 hyundai sonata has all the bits you need, including n/a ecu. look for the g4cp engine, it is the 4g63 n/a with a hyundai rocker cover.
you will still have to get front engine mount

Cheers mate, that helps me a lot! And I now know that the wrecker back home has 3 of them in his yard, plus another 12 in Canberra, so between 15 sonata's I should be able to get the parts.

Engine mount is easy, my father is a fitter, and his boss is an engineer, so he could possible modify one and make it look normal.

I am going to use the gearbox out of a 1.8l lancer, as the stock proton one sharted itself on a 4500km drive Albury-darwin, and that was the gearbox I could get, mates up to both donks, cos I took the old (crapped out) proton one and mated it to the '63 I have to check the rumour that, apparantly, those 4G engines share the same bellhousing/bolt pattern.

Also, I have a 7 bolt 4G63 crank but already have the 7 bolt fly to suit. Only think I'm gonna upgrade is the clutch, the way I use the Ute (Hard) I go through a clutch every 10,000 kms or so, so I may go for a heavier clutch. Thinking an Excedy Sports Tuff Heavy Duty Kit Part MBK-6276HD or a Sports Ceramic Part MBK-6276SC or if I wanted to get really serious, I could go Race Ceramic Part MBK-6276RC.

Also, just in case anyone wants to see, to clear up confusion, I have included a pic of the ute.

if you have a 6 bolt vr4 engine then the sonata is the parts car. if you have a 7 bolt engine then it different to the sonata.
if you are running the 6bolt engine, then the 7bolt crank and flywheel is useless to you.
i am pretty sure the sonata gearbox is also suitable for you. (WRONG!) there are 2 different bolt patterns, you can pick them by the distance between the top 2 bolt holes. i think mine is 110mm? check before parting with money.
sonata gearbox doesnt have the roll stopper mounts on it, so its no good unless for parts.

i personally dont like the button clutches either ceramic or sintered bronze. the buttons are harder than the pressure plate and flywheel, so instead of the pressure plate wearing out (cheap to replace) the friction surfaces become the pressure plate and flywheel (expensive to replace).

nice ute, and i like rum. mine is here, page4 has a pics

7 Bolt Crank, Flywheel, Engine, so all that mates up.

I was going to use the 1.8l 4G93 box that I have, the 4G93 box has the same pattern as the 4G15 box I pulled off the 'buck, now the box I pulled off the 'buck, I bolted onto the new 4G63 engine to see if it would fit, which it did. So I was gonna fit a larger clutch because, well, I have a larger flywheel, and using a small clutch on a large flywheel is just silly now isn't it?

How about an organic face?

I like it!

That said, you up in the Territory mate? Those are NT plates on your 'buck I think?

Well, all the poo turned to s**t, turns out she wasn't a vr4, gsr, or any other type of galant, lancer, etc.

The bloke that I bought the engine off cut the corner, or had no idea, or tried to pull the wool over, either way, he got me a Mitsubishi RVR N23W 4G63 Donk...and thus, wiring looms in Australia = Near Impossible to find.

-Rumbuck

It's no issue. People have been using rvr engine in gsr's etc for ages.

I'm using a proton gti loom on my vr4 engine in my cc gsr.

People have also used vr4 looms in cc lancers

We are using an RVR engine in my mates GSR

You cant use the RVR engine loom in our cars anyway, what you need to do is get an EVO or GSR loom

And throw all the EVO parts on the RVR engine such as the CAS, throttle body, cam side mount.. theres more i just have a mind blank

if your going to be doing mudhole to the windscreen you might want to think about a snorkle. as the intake is just behind the headlight normally.

EVO Safari spec :)
