Hey guys,
Have had a mate looking over my car and he thinks my motor needs new rings and bearings so thought I better look for another motor. Have had abit of a look round and have not seen many 4g63's round is there not many left these days or am I just not looking hard enough?

Is it better to throw another motor in or have this one pulled down? Don't really want to spend any more than acouple of 1000 at the most! After what you told me Rob I'm starting to think this car is cursed!! Any ideas guys will listen to anything at the moment?

Tony

They are getting harder to find!

If you have a good motor, just rebuild yours if you can live with the downtime.

Although, there a some motors for sale in the FS section.

Is it an evo, vr4 or late model evo?

It's a vr4 baz, they are getting very hard to find up here because mo (mdk87) has about 30 of them

I would tear down and do a refresh on your current motor - bearings, rings, seals, gaskets, etc nothing to overboard

So if the pistons and rods are ok just reuse them? What sort of cost would I be looking at for a build like that? The car has very low kms but its barely done an kays in the last 5 years.

Have not done a compression test yet but its blowing blue smoke and has gone threw over 5 litres of oil (1 small oil leak) in a little over 1200km. Have not really driven this thing that hard. Getting very frustrated with it though!

Check emails Tim

I would rebuild your original engine mate!
It sucks when you buy another motor, rebuild it and go to fit it only to realise that something doesn't line up right or has a different bracket etc.
It shouldn't take a qualified mechanic too long.
The best thing is, it will have the original motor, and everything fits together nicely..(well as nice as possible).

When I started my RS half cut motor that had been sitting for 1.5years, it blew alot of smoke too, eventually dried out...but yeah 5L is alot hey.
Do a compression test buddy, you might find that it is something simple.
And then rebuild it with goodies when you have saved up some cash for it.
Otherwise you'll have decked your head too many times or whatever.
They're a pretty good engine when they're stock.

Don't forget that something as simple as a turbo seal can cause blue smoke and large consumption of oil!!

Thanks guys! So what tests can be done to give me a better idea other than a compression test? If the compressions good does that mean the motor is ok or can you still have ok compression when the motors on its way out?

Don't really want to have to change turbos yet but pulling it off should rule that out?
Tim didn't you say that mechanic on compton roads good??

troy has it i think tim, unless he slipped it into my tool bag, i'll have a look in the shed when there is more light

Before pulling the motor down for a rebuild, pull the exhaust pipe off the turbo and see how much oil is down there.
A mechanic would know to check a lot of things (including a stuffed PCV valve) before condemning a motor to a rebuild (unless it's in his own best interest).
Like I said, when we compression tested it ages ago, it was fine, not perfect but well within acceptable tolerances.
It had this same problem when it came to me. The chinese turbo that was on there had pumped buckets of oil down the exhaust and that oil has probably never been flushed out. When the TD05 14B turbo was on there, I am pretty sure that it didn't blow smoke, but will check with Michael to see if that's true. Michael even went to the trouble of finding a good vr4 manifold, having it machined flat and finding a good 14b to put on there. It pains me to see some dickweed remove all of that for the crap you have on there atm.

(Dickweed - if you are on this forum, please announce yourself, I would like to have words with you <_<)

The guy I brought it off said that the last turbo that was on there was smoking real bad and thats why this one got bolted on! Well if thats the problem i'm happier that I don't need to pull the motor out but in saying that I can't afford to buy the turbo/manifold that I want yet. Think I will try and catchup with Tim first and then book the car in to get afew things fixed.

*check the turbo
*Oil leak
*belts are making a shockin noice on startup
*Overheating issue
