Anyone built up a mild n/a 4G63?

I'd like to build up something similar to the AMG 4G63 from the HG/HH era.. I don't want to do a VR4 conversion, but want info/results on porting the head, and cam swaps.

Cheers.

doin that atm but with added supercharger later on, last thing left for me is upp the comp to 10:1 and remap ECU, the n/a 4g responds very well to porting and polishing so if you can do it go ahead also up the comp to 10:1 and you would have one hell of an engine for n/a.

not many ppl are doin up N/A but get in touch with RPW and they have a load of info for working on 4g N/A's

I think it's basically

Cyclone intake manifold, remapped ecu, upped compression and some meatier head gear to take redline a bit further up and a 2.25 or 2.5 inch exhaust and you've got yourself oh... 25kw?

But it will sound horny :p

Cheer guys, good to see some interest.

I'm no n00b to Galants, been driving them 10ys'? But has anyone done these cams? Replaced them with RPW HKS CROWER ? I know what I should expect, just need examples.. we all kno what it's like to do up a car with little money!

So Far:
JDM 4G63 - 147hp (-wear) Cyclone plenum does little.
RPW 4-1 Race Headers
2.5" Mandrel Bent Sys w/ s/s SuperCat twin outlet (No Cannons here!)
New 2.5" Cat
K&N stock.

One of the best mods was just the filter.

Car is lowered, new shocks next week. Gearbox finished today.

The toyo supercharger project sounds good mate, seen your name on another Galant site..?!

I saw the AMG article couple years back, and it should've been a bigger hit I reckon.

Keep the feedback commin

125kw nice, after much more really. It's a heavy car to start with..!

My red one had:

2.25 inch straight through exhaust from standard headers (should have replaced them)

K&N filter

Smooth intake pipe (rather than the ruffled plastic piece of shit)

Quaife or KAAZ front LSD in a fully rebuilt box (yay for 3k+ rebuilds)

not much else.

Went hard enough for me. I gave up at that point and bought a turbo (IE a vr4)

I still loved it :/

That's awesome dude. I still want a VR4.. But you did it, that's a big step.
My exhaust didn't need to be 2.5", 2.25" is perfect. But 2.5" would be fine (max!) for Cam's or Turbo.

Now I just want to play with the twin cam head, really see what can be done.

The Crower ones are sounding the best deal, just gotta work out what ECU I'd need, and total cost to see if it's alright.

If I couldnt' find anythign better to spend cash on, i'd build another for FWD rally/khanacross/etc.

63's HUM when they get above 6k. Esp N/A ones with headwork.

Where is this intake now?

What have you actually done/got done. Was it worth relocating the battery? It looks a good setup, where's the MAS? still intact in the filter that far away?!

What are you gonna do ECU wise? does mods and a Chip work, or need a custom chip or full control ECU?

Intake pipe is in my shed somewhere. Possibly. If I didn't throw it out by accident.

It was just a 3.25 inch (I think that's the size of the maf exit) with two 45 degree bends from stock can to tb and a reducer on the end. Pretty simple, but made -lots- of good noises.

If you want to go hardcore, you'll need eitehr full control or at least a piggyback. I don't think you can chip ggsr ecu's and if you can, nobody has done any research into the code on them so would be worthless wasting your time. Just get an old/cheap ecu because you won't need much finetuning due to lack of boost.

Fit an EGT gauge and tune off the AFR in relation to that.

Cheers man. See if you can find that intake. I don't wanna relocate that battery. Was thinking of cutting a neat patch out of the air box facing 45' up, and running a stainless pipe to the TB.

There's a couple of chips for em, and they're dropping in price.

Am also looking at TB upgrade (it's only 3mm bigger tho!) and getting the spare intake I have matched, and smoothed.. gotta get quotes.

there are a few mods on the MAS it self which i have done gives a lil more when you need it, my old air box in the pick below with the CAI gave me 1psi on the free way but was a lil restrictive during city driving, you also suck in ppls exhaust fumes which makes you idle crap.....

GSR ecu with a copied chip from the AMG would be freakin awsom!! espesh with matching mods would fly. straight pipe from maf to throttle 3" would make good diff, also vent rocker cover to atmo with a lil filter.

mods: pritty much copied the AMG Galant only thing left is the cams/comp and added some old school V8 tricks.
also the maf was extended an inch sounds odd but it works when on WOT, if you notice in your air box the head of the air filter (k&N) and the head of the MAS on the inside, has a gap of only 3/4" between the MAF intake and tip of filter. do some maths and thats not alot of flow, increase it and it makes a feel able difference in take off and also sound. i'll get photos when i clean my filter next.
as for batt relocation is alot better for my amps cause they drained like no tomoro, but also leaves more space in enigine bay and less wires hanging around if done right.
the ecu....... proly look into a piggy back, the guy i bought my galant off hand a Auto Galant hatch (not GSR) with a stock 4g63 dohc, with a bolt on turbo and plug and play piggy back, went hard but pinging was rediculos soo might just do that, i believe it was a Wolf 3D system

also new mod: bigger thermos, running colder then stock to compinsate for the upcomming mods. also cleans up the engine bay..... wat ya think...

Entaran bro 63's at 6k omg nice note all round and the poping on the way down it uncanny!!! hehehe

pik1:earlier design, flows better the other way....
Pik2/3: recent one with new thermos good for cars with large turbo's

in some of the piks you can just see the extention on the MAS case to give more flow to the mouth of the MAS

Looks interesting, would love to hear it.

Why vent the breather tho?

What info have you got on cams that suit a n/a application? Are the crower/ HKS turbo ones with 264' duration or the 272' of any good to us?

Still waiting on info from Ivan Tighe cam's..

the breather....... put it this way, when you take off the pipe from the MAS to the throttle, were do you think all the oily crap come from? and its part of the EGR so it re burns the oil fumes....

as far as i know, the cams wont do crap just make our idle lumpy, unless you have supporting mods on the ecu. although the stock cams with adjustable cam gears will work very well, but its give and take. either gain bottom end torque and loose top end or gain top end and loose bottom end torque...... adjust one or the other intake/exhaust, adjust both and they cancle out...... but having both open wider at 0deg timing, unless the engine was at 4000+rpm all the time...... i dont see the point in spending the money unless thers future mods to come.

from what i can figure out, stock cams, stock valve sizes with port and polish work very well with n/a engines, squezing out the smallest amount of HP with out a turbo......

I assume the breather also keeps the TB and valves the slightest bit lubricated.

I'd like about 200hp out of it, from:

cam's + ECU,
intake pipe + TB + manifold
+ mods already fitted.

Do you know anyone who has run the cam wheels on the stock cams?
