Does anyone know how i might be able to tell what the head is that is fitted to my engine ?Over the past few weeks i had my car in the workshop to get some bigger valves and some port work, and they said they put another head on the car because mine looked like it had been shaved a few times and they wanted a better head on it since im going to the trouble or porting it.the port sizes are the same as the evo head i had on there but the thermostat assy is quit different, looks like a vr4 thermostatare there any obvious markings / cast numbers that can determine what its off ?

size of the ports can tell you if its vr4 or not, they have massive inlet ports cause of the cyclone shit

aahhhh and dont forget RVR heads too guys (the Eclipse type motor). There's 3 different intake port sizes on the 4G63T DOHC heads so it seems. VR4 has biggest, EVO (and RVR Hypergear I suppose) have next size down, then RVR Sportsgear has the smallest with G6K cast into the gearbox end of the head (yep, smalller than EVO on the engine I just did). I've learned a bit from working on this current RVR engine for a conversion into a mate's coupe... (stay the fuk away from the non evo-type RVR engine) lol . If you have an RVR head then the thermostat housing IS different on both sides of it. You have to change the top and bottom thermostat covers for EVO items. We had to buy new ones from Meek the other day. Throw in a new thermostat whilst youre at it. Any from a Lancer/GSR/Evo will fit the big hole (58-60mm from memory) and its Dayco part number DT57E at your local parts store.

Also don't forget the hyundai stuff guys!

You have the 1.8L lantra which uses the same type of head with larger than evo ports, smaller than vr4 ports...

So at the top of the head on the gearbox side it has a casting "2P" and below that towards the thermostat has another casting "Y3" and i think a "g" stamp next to it

anyone know what it is ? theres no other marking on it

Just double checked, it says 2P up the top near the rocker cover and Y38 down near the thermostat housing, thermostat assy has 3 bolts in a triangle shape roughly spaced 2" appart

There is way to see if its a big port of a small port from the head, they have a cast marking on the side near the CAS, these marking are

VR4 Big Port - 2.0
4G67 - 1.8
EVO 1 - G6K - 1 or 2
EVO 2 - G6K - 3
EVO 3 - G6K - 4 or 5

My RVR head has 6GS - 3

Thats all i got right now

the rvr heads and evo heads are the same in some models. some have g6k on them which are the same as evo, but auto cams ARE diff to evo items. but head is not. there is also a g6s model head also. but this did also have the same ports as evo. there is ment to be the last of the rvr 4g63t motors of the same gen that i am told have diff setup.

Michael, you saw the intake ports in the RVR head of Angelo's engine. Even though it has 6GK and 5 in the end of it, the ports are nowhere near the size of EVO ports. IMO the casting marks on the end dont determine the port size. Its a pity I didnt measure them up but they were small as.

i also beleive this is true, that the g6k and g6s markings may not relate to port sizing or head type. wish they made life easier.
