Help Support 4GTuner:

It wont "punch a hole in the transfer" lol!!

I ran my old GSR like this for a while and had no dramas other than it leaking oil from that seal.
Its supposed to have an 8mm detent ball in there which you can fit to the end of the output shaft by removing the end cover and then the vcu and dropping the ball into the little hole on the end of the shaft.

I have just gone out and looked at a transfer case here.
The shaft goes in about 2.5 inches leaving around the same amount of metal on the side of the transfer case remaining.
For it to " punch or wear through" that....would take a hell of a long time / amount of force.
So I think what you have" heard" ...is far from being correct.

Not only that..the shaft has splines cut into it...I find it hard to believe that the non splined section of the shaft can go into the transfer case past the cut section of the splines?

OP... just pull off the end cover and VCU and drop a ball in the hole when you can. Just keep an eye on the amount of oil dropped if you are going to drive it. You dont want to run either with low oil thats when you will run into dramas.

No worries. May as well do it properly. Won't be too messy as haven't put any oil in the gearbox. Will see if can buy the detent ball new from dealer. Am I the only one who seems to spend a lot of time fixing up other people's f*@'?ups? Makes me wonder how long its been running without the detent ball and what other problems will be under the end cover. Grrrrrrrrrr!

I think its 1/4" ball not 8mm. In fact I will put a stubby on it being 1/4".
Can get them from a bearing shop easy as. They cheap so get one of each.

You could get serious and check the bearing preload while you in there. Certainly give the shafts a wiggle. And slop should be fixed.

Yep, it seems im a fixer too.
