Hey guys,

Ive already spoken to some of you in regards to this, but I thought id post up to get other peoples opinions as well.

I want to sell on my current daily, as I need something with proper 4WD capability now for work duties, daily driver duties, and probably infrequent GSR towing duties as well (may as well)

I really like the Old Skool Pajero SWBs, and have been looking at the Imported 2.5L turbo diesel ones, which have the rear disc brakes and coil springs that the Aus spec ones dont.

From what I can gather, they arent all that crash hot in the rough stuff, and have some major downpoints - mainly to do with drivetrain (and maintenance for the diesels).

Early model SWB and MWB land cruisers have also been suggested, but i really dislike the look of them .. :(

I dont mind dual cab 4x4 hilux's but then theyre getting a bit big ....

too many things to think about. I am also tempted to get an Evo Pajero, but then again, parts prices, maintenance costs are going to be a pain in the arse.

id like to hear peoples thoughts and opinions on this, so let fly :)

i am looking at Disco's Dan. Alot of people say they are shit but everyone that I talk to that actually has one love them???
V8, pretty heavy (good for towing) need to get one on gas tho, coz it would be $$$ if you don't.

from my experience,I borrowed my mates turbo deisel hilux surf and they can't tow at all. You really need a 6. I just put a deposit down on a Swb v6 93 Jackaroo. I would either go one of those or a shortie patrol. If ya do go a pagero just make sure you check the weight for towing.

discos are cheap to buy.dear to fix.

but as you say alex people that have them are usually pretty happy with them. a mate(mechanic) bought one with a dead motor and fixed it up

hes now in love

I've heard they are alright Dan.

My mate had a crazy Ford Maverick (which he actually used properly unlike 90% of 4WD's) but since sold it. He's told me he's got a new 4WD now but :| (I knew he couldnt resist without one)

His whole family is 4WD crazy, they've got three :|

Pajero would suit alot better than a Patrol, can tow fine... well the V6s. The Pajeros are also alot nice to drive than the Patrols, as for being no good in the rough stuff, I dont know about that, think you'd be doing some very serious 4wding to find the limits of a Pajero with good rubber.

Oh yeah, BTW I have a Pajero and love it :D

Alright i have spoken to my DAD as his a 4wd nut and was ex pres of some toyota club

Now a 6 is not all you need to tow the 4runner can tow but it does have issues with low down power where as the 80s series turbo diesel, we have that tows like a dream didnt even know car was behind it nice and smooth and heaps of room.

and i would not go a shortie for towing if that is what you plan on doing

also shorty are not the best for climbing big hills i have been told but there good for mud and rocks.

also you have to watch out with pajero 4wd as there a mono chassi design thing been told they can strech and when 4wd can not be good when getting towed out

The monococh chassie started in 2001(The funky curvy looking ones), all models NL and before were of a ladder frame construction just like most 4WDs.

I was under the impression you were looking at ones a little older than that due to cost and such.

spot on windex na-nl have full chassis

nm(01) on are monochassis

just get a porsche cayenne turbo,i can vouch that they tow great

yeah i didnt know full details just spoke with dad quickly in regards to 4wd

im lucky i just drive his ones when there not broken :D

what about a triton 4x2 or 4x4 my mate has one of them which he uses for towing and he says that on hills it pulls away from landcruisers pajeros and other bigger 4x4's

i think his is around 97-00, he only paid 10k for it as well, 3.0L v6 DOHC, good on fuel he rekons, and it is pretty reliable, big towing capacity, he only has the 4x2, but the 4x4 aren't much more

They are grouse, still a ladder frame so nice and tough. The 3.2DiD is meant to be a cracker. They are better than the Pajs because they have coils at the front rather than torsion bars.
